"To truly encourage appreciation and support for native , we need to shift people’s perspective. Instead of viewing lawns with wildflowers as unattractive or a sign of laziness, let’s celebrate the benefits they bring. It’s certainly easier, cheaper and probably safer to enjoy existing wildflowers than to go to the trouble of removing them with herbicides."

Dont be selfish & tarmac over your front garden. Do this instead. The planet will thank you for it

(& I'll make loud positive comments about your beautiful front garden when I walk past, instead of pulling a face)

‘For some New Zealanders, that means their days as cat-owners are over. “My wife and I love cats, but we will never have another one,” says Tony White’…’Now, he says, “We have rare birds walking past our living room and nesting in our garden – kiwi live in the patch of scrub at the back of our house. They would not be there if we had a cat.”’

"It’s all about balance. And balance in a garden looks like an ecosystem where a diversity of living things can find a home, make babies, predate or be preyed upon as well as, occasionally, damaging some of the plants that we covet."

It’s time to make peace with your garden ‘pests’ – here’s why | Gardens | The Guardian

@MostlyTato @glitch25 I was about to say the same thing. I just let wildlife friendly plants self seed, relocating to pots the ones which start dominating too much (dead nettles, creeping butter cup etc). But on the whole I adopt the relaxed gardening approach. The result is much more attractive and wildlife friendly than anything I could have achieved had I planned it!

@jatkinson Do you know what sort of this is, as I've always wanted some in my garden?

"Hard surfaces absorb more heat...We have 22m gardens in the UK. If we cover them all in plastic grass and paving, the landscape will become hot, dry, lifeless and unpleasant. But if they are all full of plants we could have a really vibrant living landscape.”

Let weeds and climbers grow to help wildlife beat heat, says top gardener | Gardens | The Guardian

"When planning green spaces, consideration needs to be given to ensure planting is diverse and moth-friendly as well as bee-friendly, to ensure both our plants and insects remain resilient in the face of the climate crisis and further losses."

"To sum up, delay mowing until midsummer, keep your lawn free of clippings and leave patches more unkempt for longer to please butterflies and bees. But give it regular trims from August onwards to encourage globally rare mushrooms. You’ll then see that grasslands are diverse and dynamic habitats just waiting to be unleashed. "

"Manicured lawns are essentially green deserts: ostensibly full of plants but with nothing to nourish bees or other wildlife."

There could be incentives to promote environmentally friendly gardening (although I'm not sure about council tax as so much of this is needed for essential services). I've always thought the UK government should bring in a form of planning permission for gardens if owners want to put down plastic grass, pave over for cars etc...Banning plastic grass would also obviously be a step in the right direction.

"For pollinators' sake, don't spring into garden cleanup too soon": Resist that urge to get outside and clean up the yard (depending on where you live).
