The people who fight the conversion of driving lanes, parking spots & parking lots into anything else are never accused of wanting to freeze a city in amber.

If your primary experience of the world is via private automobile, then everyone you encounter is an irritation, impediment, rival, or threat. This is why social bonds are so weak in America.
The ultimate absurdity in the US transportation system is that if you want to go to a nice place that isn't ruined by cars, you have to use a car.

"All these people driving everywhere all the time are getting in the way of me driving everywhere all the time," Cherry Blossom edition.
Made possible by almost a century of cities reassuring car owners that speedy driving & free car storage were their highest priorities.

I've often said that when drivers are entitled to the presumption of innocence, then by necessity, the presumption of guilt lands on their victims.

What's the best response when people say, "Like it or not, we still need cars in this city, so [typical opposition to new building on parking grounds]."
What I'm looking for is the kind of *response* (not argument or clever comeback) that helps move people off this stance. I mean, have you ever been insulted into changing your mind?
Lots of outrage about looting in Buffalo, none about all of the people violating the driving ban. Wonder why that is.

Driving isn't convenient, it has been convenienced.
Cycling isn't inconvenient, it has been inconvenienced.
Big difference.

Then go find the instances where they reported that a cyclist, not a bicycle, did something bad.

Another one. They call themselves Transportation Departments when all they do is highways. Which is like calling yourself a grocery store when all you sell is chips.

Here's a timely example: a city gets a big snowstorm and officials declare a *travel* ban. Not a *driving* ban. Walking & skiing (city folk get out their skis in storms) are legit & safe forms of travel in snow. Not to mention those who bike year round.

Something that fascinates me is the way we default to cars & driving whenever we need to make an analogy or comparison. I'd love to know if any linguists have written about it.

Can officials stop saying "travel ban" when they mean "driving ban?"
Lots of us are perfectly capable of doing errands on foot when driving conditions are hazardous.
