I've updated "Dressing a toddler for winter cycling" to mention all the weather canopy options available for cargo bikes these days. These are a great option to cut the wind chill and add some warmth. There are options for longtails, frontloaders and the Madsen.

My 4 year old had a choice to ride on a bike for 3 miles in the cold & snow or go by car. She chose the bike.

When we arrived I asked if anything was cold. Her ankles were a little cold– due to anklets instead of full-height socks. That would be easily solved with proper socks in the future.

I have some hope that if children can get beyond the excuse that “it’s too cold to ride”, then perhaps some adults can get over it as well.

If you are just getting started with winter bike commuting: comfort is achieved with a warm inner layer and a wind-blocking outer layer. This matters for bottoms, tops and hands.

Tightly woven synthetics make good wind-blocking layers. Some garments that are warm-enough while standing are horrible choices once moving. I'm looking at you jeans and hoodies!

While my #1 tip for staying warm winter bike commuting is Bar Mitts, my number #2 is... diet!

I ramp up circulation boosting spices like cinnamon, ginger and cayenne and focus on foods that generate more heat during digestion. The result has been that my long, thin fingers stay warmer longer.
