A Jurassic fossil fern in the Nottingham Natural History Museum collection at Wollaton Hall. This specimen has been picked out to go on display with lots of other dinosaur-age fossils in a new dinosaur gallery in 2024.

Here's a short report by Everything Dinosaur on yesterday's book launch event for The Tyrannosaur's Feathers at Wollaton Hall: https://blog.everythingdinosaur.com/blog/_archives/2023/08/06/the-tyrannosaurs-feathers-by-adam-smith-and-jonathan-emmett.html
It was exciting for @JonathanEmmett and me to perform public readings of our book for the first time, and these were following by book signings under the T. rex skeleton – the perfect place for it!

Palaeontologists Richard Forrest @richardforrest (left) and Jordan Bestwick (right) inspect the fossilised remains of a pliosaur recently excavated from the Oxford Clay by the Peterborough Geological and Palaeontological Group. The disarticulated bones include many beautifully preserved teeth.
Richard, who is the chair of the group, brought it into the #NottNatHist museum for us to look at and help him identify the different bits.

Picking out fossils from the collection for potential future display. Came across this spectacular starfish fossil from the Jurassic of England.
The Nottingham Natural History Museum at Wollaton Hall is a treasure trove of fantastic specimens.

A low angle shot of Wollaton Hall's replica T. rex skeleton, a permanent new feature at the Nottingham Natural History Museum.
Relatedly, my new children's picture book, The Tyrannosaur's Feather's, will be published in two months (and the launch will take place at Wollaton Hall!)
I wrote a little bit about them both on my blog here: https://plesiosauria.com/the-tyrannosaurs-feathers-book-coming-soon/

Curator @AdamStuartSmith is usually behind the camera, but here he is in our newest gallery, "The Taxidermists' Tale". The new displays here explore the materials and process of building taxidermy animals and habitat dioramas.
The gallery is open to the public and, like the rest of the museum, is completely free to enter.

@Vickysaurus I was curious because we have some similar new displays at the Nottingham Natural History Museum, Wollaton Hall. The cast of the Charnia fossil looks identical, with a wedge missing from the corner, so it probably is!

This is what all the hard work was leading up to – today the new gallery at Wollaton Hall was abuzz with visitors. Natural history museums really have the power to pull in crowds.

"Is it Real?"
That's what many visitors ask about me and the other taxidermy animals in the Nottingham Natural History Museum.
Today is the Press Launch for our new 'The Taxidermists' Tale' gallery, which seeks to answer that question.
It will open to the public tomorrow alongside a new temporary gallery of microscopic sculptures by Willard Wigan.
Entry to the museum and both new galleries is free.

Not all animal specimens in natural history museums are taxidermy.
Sometimes, a painted cast is both simpler to create and looks more realistic. This grass snake cast is part of a diorama scene showing the diversity of British reptiles and amphibians.
Oh, and there's lots of dried moss in it, too!

Heading home at sunset today – my workplace was looking splendid.

New galleries inside are opening in time for the Easter holidays.

This week I've been leading a team of technicians moving dozens of delicate habitat dioramas and taxidermy specimens from store rooms into a new gallery.
We've been traipsing up and down spiral staircases and stone steps all day every day and my legs are now jelly.

A couple of lazy big cats – a leopard in the tree, a cheetah on the platform – watch on as their new Africa habitat diorama is being built.
Most of our historical taxidermy collections date back to the 1800s and early 1900s.
And no, they didn't climb up those ladders.
