Sailing on the Piankatank ~ Video
https://youtu.be/09XimWxZtlo
A dozen or so handmade wooden sailboats gather every spring at an old steamboat landing on the Piankatank River, a tidal river on the Chesapeake Bay. Sailors in the Old Bay Club of the Traditional Small Craft Association meet up with builders from the Deltaville Maritime

At traditional Chesapeake crabbing skiff called a "Stickup". Two masts and sails, the smallest mounts in the bow and tilts forward, opposite any other rig.

Spring Cleaning
Getting on of the boats ready after the long winter nap. Washing down dust and mouse nests, finding all the scattered bits, trying to remember how it all works.

Snug Ashore
Yeocomico River, Virginia
This cove, a tributary of the Potomac River, was the site of a naval battle during the war of 1812. A cannonball from the melee is still embedded in the brick wall of a 200 year old church along the shore.

Sunrise in a Lotus Garden
Sassafras River, MD
Sailing the upper Chesapeake, was chased ashore by a tornado. Took refuge in a hotel for the night.
Back next evening, rowed into a sheltered creek by starlight. Too dark to see, anchored and went to sleep.
Woke to wild turkeys and quail calling from shore. Found I had slept in a bed of lotus, water a quilt of red and purple, clouds ablaze.

Morning in a Field of Lotus
Sassafras River
Sailing the upper Chesapeake, a tornado chased me ashore. Took refuge in a hotel for the night. Relaunched late next day, looked for a sheltered creek, rowing in the dark by starlight. Couldn't see, so stopped, tossed out the anchor, and went to sleep.
Woke to calls of wild turkeys and quail at dawn. Found I had slept in a bed of lotus, the water a quilted mirror of the sky, clouds ablaze.

Duck boat, with ducks.
One of two 19th century hunting skiffs I've built, with plans from the Smithsonian ($15, if you mail a check and a letter asking for them).
Design evolved on Chesapeake and Barnegat Bays, to hold a man, a dog, and some decoys for hunting on shallow water in winter, when there was no farming income.
They would stay out for days, sleeping in the boa, in freezing conditions. Then sail across the bay and sell to restaurants in Baltimore and DC.

We had to board this boat while it was sailing, come alongside and switch crews while moving. These traditional boats are so over canvassed they fall over if they stop. Crew scooches in and out on the outrigger planks to balance the boat against the wind. To tack, the crew slides in, throws planks to other side and slides out. Time it wrong and everyone goes for a swim.

Per the last post on Sailing to Freedom, this is another one of the boats I've built. This one has the topsail up, but you can see the lines and the rig are very similar.
Lovely boats. I would be happy to sail a larger version of these to freedom. (Though maybe not to save the lives of those inside it.)

Lunch Landing
Jamestown, VA
One of the sailboats I built, on the the Chickahominy River. This is the furthest north for many southern species, like Bald Cypress, Spanish Moss, even alligators. Their range is creeping north as climate warms.
Boat is made of cedar, cypress, white oak, black walnut, ash, and Spanish Cedar (a kind of mahogany once used to make cigar boxes from the Caribbean).
The tanbark sails were hand made by a friend,
