For #WorldBicycleDay I’m going to mention my favorite safety accessory. My bell has a rich mellow tone. It started it’s journey as a bright brass Crane Bell from Japan. I softened it with heat until it had a soft red glow. Then I hammered it to get a the beautiful rough finish. Doing this long enough that the brass hardened back up until it had the sound I wanted. I used earl gray to give it a pink color and then dish soap for the brown. I ring it sometimes as I ride just for my own amusement.

#WorldBicycleDay My dad was also an avid cyclist and worked and saved like mad when he was about 17 to get a proper racing bike, his pride and joy. On the morning of his wedding in Mansfield, Notts, he cycled up from Enfield, north London, in his wedding suit. In the rain. My nan had to rapidly dry him out in front of their coal-fired range to get him to the church on time. He's smirking in the photos. Their honeymoon was cycling round Cornwall.

Oh, so it's #WorldBicycleDay...mine is under a cover in the yard outside my kitchen awaiting my attention. It's a Raleigh, with Claude Butler handlebars and pedals, custom-made gears, a funny sized frame, a fabulous Brookes saddle (very uncomfortable for me so it's hanging on my wall now) and was commissioned years ago by my Uncle who worked at Raleigh at the time as a present to my mum, who was an avid longtime cyclist. She gave it to me when she was about 70 and used a small bike for a while.
