Did you know that a cow and a heifer are different?
A heifer is a young female who has not yet given birth to any cows. Once she has given birth, she will produce milk and be referred to henceforth as a cow.

I was today years old when I discovered the concept of „#grammatics“
(or actually, the-day-before-yesterday, during Mary Macken-Horarik’s keynote at #WRAB2023, but today the book arrived)

Because of Reasons, I find myself looking for the history of circuit diagrams - when did they start being used? When were they standardised? Would they have been used and, if so, what would they have looked like circa 1930?
Wikipedia offers some historic symbols, noting where they're "old" or "very old", with no indication of the years they were used.
My google-fu has failed; is there a a magic phrase I don't know? I tried "please".
Got totally sidetracked while trying to research a detail for my book, ended up on Cardiff Uni's library webpage and through that managed to track down a book on the history of the British Embassy in Prague, which I have bought and should have in a few days! #writing #amwriting #writingresearch #books

Today's novel-related Google searches (I don't have to, I can apply handwavium and bypass it, but dammit, I *need* to know): Bremsstrahlung, cosmic radiation, and luminescence vs phosphorescence.
For a novel that features hyperspace-dwelling giant squids and a lost ship called the Pathos Verdes III, I'm doing an awful lot of factual research... 🙃

Today’s #WritingResearch prompted by Episode 89 of Worldbuilding for Masochists, is #geology related. http://www.geology.wisc.edu/~chuck/Classes/Mtn_and_Plates/mtn_roots.html
For a proper #introduction:
I'm a #ComputationalLinguist by training doing #WritingResearch and #DigitalLinguistics by profession. Oh, and I do #DocumentEngineeing with a focus on #WritingTechnology on the side. I'm also interested in (and publish on and worked in) #DigitalTransformation in #HigherEd.
I live in #Lausanne (and #Zurich) and work as professor at the #ZHAW in #Winterthur.

...okay but “marquee” and “marquis” denote two very different concepts and using the former for a person is so not on.
(Don't get me started on pronunciation standards. British English mangling of French borrowings make me twitch.)
