Interestingly, way before Unicode, Indic came up with their own joiner character, the halant ्

In Indic scripts, all consonant characters come with an inherent vowel. In Hindi, this is the schwa /ə/, usually transliterated "a". So क is not k, but ka. We use the halant to silence the inherent vowel to make consonant clusters.

So kya (what) would be written क्या. Unicode respects the halant. The character क्य (ky) is actually made of 3 code points: क (ka) + ् (halant) + य (ya)

An archeology group just discovered the first known inscription in Euskera language (a.k.a. Basque) and I think it is beautiful at so many levels 😍

We used to think Euskera was mainly non-written and the first samples dated from the 10th century. This makes it the first record of written Euskera, from 150 BC!
