See the Current Date on Ubuntu’s Calendar Icon
Ever noticed that the calendar app icon on macOS and iOS always shows the current (and correct) date? It’s one of those subtle, unassuming features that likely goes unnoticed by most. But when you’re aware of it you can’t help but think: “heh, that’s kinda neat”. Well, now you can get something similar on the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS desktop. Show Date on Calendar Icon in Ubuntu Now, I dare say some of you will be yelling “Joey, the date is shown at the top of the screen in Ubuntu. If I need to see it, I can” — and you’re :sys_more_orange:

In Ubuntu 22.04 Light Means Light — Everywhere
Ubuntu 22.04 reverts back to a light GNOME Shell theme by default, having switched to a dark one in Ubuntu 21.04. We explain why this revert makes sense.

Ubuntu 22.04 Just Got a BIG Design Update (Spoiler: Looks Awesome)
Ubuntu 22.04 is looking on fire, my friends. With feature freeze now in effect (and UI freeze creeping up) a huge drop of changes just hit the daily builds, including GNOME Shell 42 and new versions of the default Yaru GTK, Shell and icon themes. The newest version of the Yaru GTK theme doesn’t deviate too far from what we’re used to but it does clearly echo the look of libadwaita with its circular window controls, increased border radius, and soft grey header bars. The slew of orange accents we previously reported on are present but, I have to say: :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 22.04 Really Hopes You Like the Colour Orange…
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is going to be very orange. I didn’t want to write about this change quite so soon as a) it’s not finished or final and b) the code hasn’t landed in Ubuntu 22.04 daily builds yet. However, people have noticed and I don’t want to look like I’m behind 💁🏻♂️. So, you may remember that last cycle Ubuntu’s community-based design team were instructed to remove purple (aka aubergine) from the Yaru GTK theme (as it is being dropped from the Ubuntu colour palette). While the great ‘de-purpling’ task didn’t end up happening in time for Indri it :sys_more_orange:

A Quick Look at Ubuntu 21.10’s Yaru Theme Changes
The upcoming Ubuntu 21.10 release features a number of visual changes big and small, and in this post I run through the most notable ones. First up, the one you probably already know about: Ubuntu 21.10 uses the Yaru light theme by default. The ‘mixed’ version of the Yaru theme (dark headers but light control) has been jettisoned and is no longer available. Ubuntu’s Appearance settings pane is updated to reflect the change accordingly: Notice anything else different about the screenshot above? I won’t be surprised if you don’t as it’s a very subtle change. But, the selected row styling :sys_more_orange:
