#Yubikeys gpg-card default pin is 123456, admin pin is 12345678. if you enter the admin key 3 times wrong, you need to factory reset the gpg-card feature

If you use pinentry loopback (CLI-input), it wont tell you if you need to enter the user or admin pin. #gnome console doesnt work reliably with the loopback pinentry, the loopback itself is very wonky.

Should probably just replace these old, basically unused #YubiKeys 4 with some new 5ers (#YubiKey 5 NFC and I guess a 5Ci for the backup / occasional Lightning use?) 🤔

Yes, the 4s are still /usable/ with a desktop…but not on any of my mobile devices, which are increasingly important even for this curmudgeonly behind-the-times codger.

I'm told 4s also don't do FIDO2?

I have evaluated hardware security #Yubikeys but never found them satisfying.

hardware keys are easily misplaced or stolen and even though you need a backup, you may not have access to the backup whenever you need it the most. The smartphone on the other hand is easily disposable and can be replaced cheaply from any hardware store worldwide.

I'm already well used to 2fa, let's see how this addition plays out in my approach to handle healthy password practices.

I've also recently started to use more passphrases instead of randomly generated passwords, way easier to remember important passwords like this!
