For a moment, we acted as if the pursuit of comfy daily life is not all, and our moderate sacrifices made us feel that life gained meaning. The display of solidarity was thus the expression of a desperate wish not to confront the depth of our crisis.

I think the intent of the article isn’t to argue for hard determinism. #Zizek lays out a more compatibilist stance in The Parallax View, but he’s really drawing more on our interpretation of history from #WalterBenjamin and the idea of a “weak messianic power” make success from failed revolutions of the past. Recontextualizing the same causal chain to open up new futures via our subjectivity.

I am a big fan, too, of the "1984", but the current situation resembles much more the "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. Regulation matters more than surveillance. Like Zizek said "Everything is permitted, you can enjoy everything, BUT deprived of its substance which makes it dangerous."
