Today's Film: White Noise

Sadly this didn't really click with me. Noah Baumbach mostly stuck to the novel by Don DeLillo but the bits that worked best are where he deviated from it. Sometimes a more literal adaption isn't the way to do & I think that's the case here.

Not without some great moments though & cinematography is great.

Today's Film: Transformers

Very 2007, it clearly knows it's audience and does everything it can to cater to them. It looks pretty good & manages to avoid containing too much exposition.

I wasn't at all convinced when Shia LeBouf suddenly developed an emotional attachment to Bumblebee. The film is also incredibly keen to promote the US military despite the fact the story doesn't really even need them.

Superb! Part thriller, part romance about a detective who falls for the key suspect in a murder enquiry. The best directing I've seen this year that puts you firmly in the main characters head even if you don't Korean. A masterpiece!

Today's Film: BARDO, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths

I could see what this was trying to do and the weird dream sequences are visually exceptional. But there's too much dull stuff in between and the film goes into great detail in explaining every little thing even when it doesn't need to.

Today's Film: Barbarian

Loved this, a horror which is set in an Airbnb house which has been double booked but it's not the other guest that Tess should be worried about!

Its use of gender is fascinating with the men all being at best useless at worst horrific.

I am never going to use an Airbnb again after seeing this!

Fascinating documentary about the incredible volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft. A beautiful relationship and stunning imagery. Loved that it was made up of footage shot by them and interviews with them so it very much feels like they are telling their own story.

Today's Film: Avatar- The Way of Water

This was fantastic! I expected the spectacle & boy that certainly delivered- the best CGI in history.

But this manages to also have a story which is beautiful & moving with a family focus that works brilliantly. A much better story than the first film.

A tad too long & the climax especially drags though.

The most noir of film noirs. Pretty dark for a film under the Hayes Code & full of tension.

The second half loses steam a little but the ending is excellent which kind of makes up for it.

Tonight's Film: Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio

Now on Netflix, this takes the classic Pinocchio story & adds a dollop of dark fantasy & a big dusting of Mussolini's Italy to create one of the very best versions seen on screen. The stop-motion animation is just stunning & works brilliantly for the story.

My one slight gripe- it's a bit longer than it needed to be.

Tonight's Film: Henry V [1944]

A revolutionary approach to putting Shakespeare on the big screen which looks incredible. The staging does however feel really old-fashioned compared to modern Shakespeare adaptions. The play itself has its moments but other than a couple of good speeches I don't think it's one of the bard's best.

Tonight's Film: Alita: Battle Angel

Loved the world and it looks amazing! Great performance by Rosa Salazar in the motion captured lead role.

The script lets it down with the second half losing any nuance & just being lots of CGI cyborg fights. It also does everything it can to set up a sequel which means it fails to give a proper ending.

Tonight's Film: Death Proof

Quentin Tarantino delivers a superb tribute to 70s exploitation films. There's some incredible stunt work with superb car chases all filmed practically.

Let down a little by the pacing with long periods of inane conversation, perhaps deliberate as part of the homage but still affects the film.

Well this cannibal-romance was like nothing else I've seen before. It's beautiful & horrific & tragic. The characters could have been totally ridiculous but instead they are convincing & even ellicit sympathy.

A fascinating film that is well worth seeing.

Comedy about an alien invasion from 2 writers of the BBC's sitcom Ghosts (on Dave/UKTV Play)

Great cast, especially Mike Wozniak & Joe Thomas. Some clever ideas including some fun political satire which is let down a little by some scatalogical humour which felt unecessary.

Weird non-ending, probably due to hoping for a series, but just sort of stops.

Tonight's Film (Ok, 'special presentation'): Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

This was perfect. A whole lot of fun with Drax & Mantis heading to Earth to get the actual Kevin Bacon as a present for Starlord.

Lots of Guardians silliness but has a warm, Christmassy tone & manages to include some real emotion. It's everything I wanted from a Marvel holiday special & a whole lot more besides.

Tonight's Film: Good Night Oppy

Documentary on NASA's Spirit & Opportunity Mars rovers streaming on Prime Video.

This focuses more on the people behind the rovers rather than the science & does a fantastic job of telling the story from idea to shutdown & the emotions the team went through.

I didn't realise I'd get so emotional about robots on Mars but this docu is great at capturing the feeling at JPL throughout the missions.
