We‘re super excited to announce that @mikemai2awesome is the winner of our #a11yTOconf ticket #giveaway! Thanks for your commitment to making the web more accessible and we’ll see you in Toronto in October!
Assistiv Labs is doing a #giveaway for a ticket to #a11yTOconf, October 19 & 20, in lovely Toronto, Canada!
Follow @AssistivLabs & RT this toot to enter the random draw on August 18.
#a11yTOconf is the friendliest, most informative #accessibility conference we’ve attended.
Note: The drawing is for conference registration only. You’ll need to work out travel and hotel on your own. We wish we could cover it all, but hopefully this makes it easier for someone to attend!

Devon Persing reports data from her #accessibility roles/hiring survey last summer (presented at #a11yTOConf a few months ago):
https://devonpersing.netlify.app/posts/survey2022part1/
Interesting nugget: 55% of respondents identified as not disabled / not having a disability.

Wow! @JuliannaRowsell 👏 thank you for your insight about inclusive and equitable design. “WCAG is the floor, not the ceiling.” #truth #a11yTOconf #a11y

Wonderful talk by Jen Payne “unless we consciously include, we unconsciously exclude.” Who are you willing to exclude? #a11y #a11yTOconf

For those who asked, here are the slides for my #a11yTOConf presentation “No coding required: writing tips for accessible content”. (I added a slide with the names of the plain language studies I referenced.)

Hi friends! Question for you... assuming travel and gathering restrictions are loosened and we are able to get together in-person for #a11yTOConf this October, would you:

Oh, this again?

Yeah, I will be there. And yeah, I will probably sponsor it again (at the lowest level because I am but one man).

I was hyperventilating like a kid on Christmas morning who was trying to find the inhaler in the gift pile.

Going to #a11yTOConf is like realizing you spend most of your life holding your breath, and then breathing deeply for four days.
Thanks so much to everyone I was able to spend time with in Toronto; you make me happy I'm here 💜

Another thing I like about #a11yTOConf: no questions during or immediately after talks, but speakers are made available 3 at a time to answer questions 1-on-1 during breaks.
I bet that this encourages learning and discourages grandstanding, public, comments-as-questions

Interesting idea at the post-#a11yTOConf tweet-up Friday night — instead of a fish bowl and car keys, they used a basket and event badges.
RT @aardrian@twitter.com
#a11yTOConf @cherryrae@twitter.com points out that the very act of testing for painful barriers — vestibular, flashing, noise, etc. — causes pain. The job is literally hurting them.
Sobering thought for cavalierly tossing known problematic experiences over the testing wall.
I have a recap from #a11yTOConf #a11yIRL #a11yTOGaming that is mostly photos and only a handful of links to slides:
https://adrianroselli.com/2019/10/a11yweekto-recap.html
But if, like me, you block Twitter on web pages all the images are there. Load over wifi.

I made a recap post of #a11yWeekTO #a11yIRL #a11yTOConf #a11yTOGaming: https://adrianroselli.com/2019/10/a11yweekto-recap.html
It has a few links to slides (more needed), is mostly my tweets, and has bounded Twitter searches for the hashtags so you can get a broader view than just mine.

At the post-#a11yTOConf tweet-up of unexpected lightning talks, @codingchaos@twitter.com explained why tool-tips are a mess. Asked by @lizdavis__@twitter.com what to so, Sarah responded “Burn them to the ground.”
Then the room decided to get #DeathToTooltips trending.
Go.
#a11yTOConf @feather@twitter.com opens with the infamous tweet showing individually packaged peeled orange wedges with the person calling it out as wasteful.
Accidental accessibility and value.
#a11yTOConf @mak_en@twitter.com showed a video of the Canadian rugby team helping to clean up homes from the typhoon in Japan; Makoto & Junko brought Japanese candies as a gift to the conference as thanks. The conference presented them with Raptors jerseys to round out their collection.
#a11yTOConf @devonpersing@twitter.com on accessibility education within organizations…
With conversations like these, “It’s very easy to become the service yourself.”
