Danni and Jamie presenting about how we involve people who use #AAC in our service provision. Valuing the Seldom Heard Voices. #CMCONF2023
Great conversation about use of AI in #Aac at #CMCONF2023 Potential and risks and role for a code of practice. Thanks @RohanSlaughter

3 #Lieblinxteams (#VfB, #AAC, #STA) heute am Start - voraussichtlich sieben Punkte. Eigentlich nicht schlecht, aber die #Alemannia hatte in Gütersloh einfach gewinnen müssen.

Mountain West officials visited #WashingtonState to make their presentation and will do the same with #OregonState.
#AAC officials have been invited and are expected to visit as well, per source.

It’s almost here! Brain based #AAC #AssistiveTech. https://www.wired.com/story/brain-implants-that-help-paralyzed-people-speak-just-broke-new-records/
The resource they've produce is well worth reading in order to understand the priorities of this group of disabled people more broadly.

The US National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) is seeking comment on how millions of $ of government funding on research related to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) ought to be spent.
The DPO Communication First have put together a resources to assist those who who cannot rely on speech alone to be heard and understood (e.g. AAC users) to respond so that NIDCD captures their priorities.

Do you use the #Sony DSF audio file format?
If yes, we have something for you! The next #NeoFinder version will be able to catalog metadata of these audio files, including #ID3 tags with #CoverArt, #Lyrics, and more.

Serata molto #nerd

Finally finding loads of information, articles, and people to answer questions, on both #NonSpeaking communication in #Autism, and the use of #AAC (Augmented and Alternative Communivation) for both speaking and non-speaking #ActuallyAutistic adults.
This is making me do lots of happy dances as I can now see this section of my book taking shape 🎉

@synoforum I *love* how companies decide things are "no longer necessary" cos "[tech has] gone mainstream several years ago". And how features we BUY are now no longer needed...
ps: Their decision doesn't address how SOME people and devices would like their #synology to transcode #AAC because players on some devices are shitty!
If you want to know more about CommunicationFIRST's work, they produced an award winning short film called LISTEN in 2021.
"A short film made by and with nonspeaking autistic people."

CommunicationFIRST have produced a new style guide that I highly recommend reading.
They are a disabled people's organisation for people who cannot rely on speech alone to be heard and understood.

I forgot to get the speech assistant comparison photo but here is my first set of #eink #AAC as compared to iPad and traditional Android tablet. I actually find this size and aspect ratio along with the low contrast my absolute favorite way I've used Avaz.
I have been absolutely loving having this so far. I adore how much easier it is to use eink with photophobia.
I obviously need to use my iPad sometimes. It's necessary with some of my disability stuff. But sometimes it's a struggle to use and sometimes this is just nicer. I've been in the this is just nicer lately so I'll have to get more comparison as time goes on.
1. There's #AAC apps where you can make phone calls using the apps on your phone and have it speak aloud. However you will absolutely struggle with people thinking you are a bot and need to plan for that ahead of time.
2. Similarly you can just go with AAC app -> bluetooth speaker -> phone if using an app somewhere besides a phone is easier. Same issue with people thinking you're a bot, though you can set this up so you can use sounds to communicate as well and that can help with that depending on accuracy and use for sounds to communicate.
3. There's IP Relay though I don't know whether using relay would be uncomfortable with calls with clients. Details vary country to country.
4. There's some apps that do just tts over phone however those I don't know if you could have done pronunciation fixes.
5. I'd make sure to give multiple AAC app recommendations rather than only Proloquo2Go preferably with advantages (and disadvantages) of each, as it is a good app but wouldn't fit nearly everyone.
I personally use IP relay the majority of the time and AAC with bluetooth speaker the rest of the time. Given that I don't use an iPhone I can't use the iPhone specific AAC apps however I also would not choose to do so if I had such a device as this is a more accessible set up for me.
Phone calls while using text based methods both requires and allows for doing more planning in advance i've found. Having scripts written for phone calls for the ability to copy/paste or press buttons is critical in order to navigate speed.
Also just, a lot of things can be done in methods which aren't phones and swapping off phones as much as possible is real helpful.
