Today, we're in Sacramento with George & Liz, asking Senators to pass #AB645.
Speed is the #1 cause of severe & fatal crashes in CA.
Speed cameras are being used in 100+ US cities.
AB 645 would allow 6 CA cities to pilot this lifesaving technology. AB 645 must be passed by the Senate by September 14.
ππ» Big thanks to so many folks who called into the Senate Appropriations Committee yesterday to urge support of life-saving #AB645 which was put "on suspense."
We're eager for this to be taken "off suspense" Friday by Senator Portantino.
AB 645 / automated speed enforcement was put in the suspense file on Monday (again) and will be heard on Friday, 9/1. The path it could take on 9/1 would be: taken off the suspense file and put on the Senate floor to be heard, added as a two year bill and heard as the same AB645 during next year's legislative session or placed back in the suspense file to be killed. Chair Portantino made positive comments about it on Monday. (I'm not endorsing this bill; just providing an update. I've come almost full circle against ASE fwiw)

Looks like ASE / #AB645 was killed *again* and put in the suspense file on 8/28.
I'm not a fan of a sweeping ASE program and govt surveillance; only as a delay until we redesign our streets. Also, only ~33 cameras would be deployed in SF.
π NEXT MONDAY, letβs keep the pressure on to move #AB645 past the Senate Appropriations Committee.

A friend who recently changed my mind on this issue posited, why we aren't tackling the root of speeding which is wide, multi lane streets in urban areas that encourage speeding?
Better road design is the long term solution vs relying on ASE or biased police enforcement.
Speed cameras would ticket drivers in these California cities under proposed bill https://www.sfchronicle.com/politics/article/california-speed-cameras-18207180.php
Final vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday on #AB645:
π³οΈ 10 to 1 YES in support of this lifesaving legislation to allow speed cameras to be piloted in California.

π¨Things are looking good for #AB645 to make it out of the Senate Judiciary Committee today! 6-0 yeses (this isn't the final vote yet, so hang tight)...
Proud to be with Assemblymember Laura Friedman here after a long day in Sacramento.
Let's #PassAB645 to save lives!
Just arrived at the State Capitol to speak in support of lifesaving speed camera bill #AB645!
We're w/Carol representing her senior living community, crash survivor Julie, & MD Susan who treated far too many crash victims in her career.
Hope to report back later that the Senate Judiciary Committee vote YES to #PassAB645!
@espenhahn_john this is the third iteration and #ab645 has gotten watered down big time. Also, SF wouldn't be allowed to install ~66 ASE cameras based on the formula they created.
Honestly I'm shocked it didn't stall out in the appropriations committee again.
The fine for going / 700% / of the speed limit on a commercial corridor would be less than 160% that for evading a $2.5 muni fare π« #ab645 #capol #sf #slowourstreets

BIG thanks San Francisco Bay Area Families for Safe Streets, Streets Are for Everyone, Streets For All, Assemblymember Laura Friedman, Assemblymember Mike Gipson, SF city leaders, San Francisco Bicycle Coalition & all of YOU!
So many of you have been speaking out for this lifesaving legislation and it's made all the difference.
Next up: the Senate with Scott Wiener to #PassAB645!
Thrilled to share that #AB645 made it over a huge hurdle! Previous versions of this bill have never made it this far. More at http://walksf.org/ab645nextstep
Takes a few taps and 30 seconds to add your voice urging Assembly members Rendon and Holden to push #ab645 beyond the appropriations committee.

@stevenray @walksf SFPD supports #ab645 but statewide LE interests view ASE as taking jobs away from cops. Le sigh...
I've been on the CTA call all morning bc its focus on #VZ and ASE #AB645.
Supes / Commissioners who made positive and honest statements about the state of our streets: Melgar, Dorsey and Preston.
#AB645 update: now in a Suspense File bc it is a pilot program although it passed the Transpo Committee 12-0. There is now opposition namely a "privacy group" and ACLU. Both fines and privacy language have been updated since last year to reflect only images of license plates and destroying data in 60 days. The bill leads with equity bc the cost of the ticket is a sliding scale based on poverty %.
