Been a while since I posted anything from the archives. This is San Fruttuoso along the Ligurian coastline of Italy, reachable only by hiking trails and from the water. The abbey on the right is dedicated to Saint Fructuosus, the most fruity and sugary of all the saints.

A pig playing bagpipes, Melrose Abbey, late 14th century.
The earliest evidence for the bagpipe in a recognisable form is on this medieval church. The Cistercian monastery having been destroyed in cross-border raids from England, was substantially rebuilt from 1385.

Artistic rendition of the Abbey on Inchcolm Island, north of Edinburgh. The Abbey was established on this island originally as a priory by David I in 1140. It is the best-preserved group of monastic buildings in Scotland.
The Romans also used the island as a staging post to supply the Antonine Wall, similarly the English used it throughout the pre-unification days.

For this is a window from the 13th century Netley Abbey not too far away from us here in Hampshire. Netley was a Cistercian abbey and it is one of the best preserved examples of its type in the south of England.

For here's something from the UK as we sometimes travel here. Fountains Abbey was founded in the 12th century after a falling out among Benedictine monks in York led to 13 of them joining the Cistercian order and building the abbey in accordance with Cistercian architectural practice. By 1535 it was the wealthiest Cistercian monastery in the country. But then Henry VIII went dissolution crazy.
