In Canadian history, 14 women have served as a premier. Three became premier by defeating an incumbent premier.
Three times, 2 women have become premier & Opp. leader in a provincial election: PEI (1993), Alberta (2012, 2023).
Alberta has had the most female premiers with 3.

Alberta Election Facts: Day 29!
The longest uninterrupted stretch of time that a party was in the Official Opposition was from 1921 to 1944, when the Liberals were the Official Opposition against the ruling United Farmers & Social Credit.
The UCP WILL DESTROY your health care! I’d love to say that this is hyperbole….it’s not

I have a very good feeling about the NDP candidate in my riding, Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse.
She came to our door a few weeks ago, and was very knowledgeable and articulate.
She's standing with a solid slate of representatives with a great deal of experience in the legislature, in business, in all walks of life. The Alberta NDP party is a great mixture of progressive values with Alberta-specific solutions.
Jordan Wilkie, the Green Party leader, is running in my riding.

Seems like a decent fellow, but I don't know that Greens would be better than the NDP, and support for Greens will almost entirely come at the expense of NDP, the strongest contender to knock the UCP out of office.
I don't feel like I can afford to support a 3rd party. And no, I'm not swayed by the idea of having a party leader as my rep.
Just doing a bit of research on my local candidates, and it appears that one of them has anti-vax tendencies:
In a twist, it's the UCP candidate, not either of the centre-left candidates!
This was 2018 - pre-COVID - and he failed to get nominated as a UCP candidate then. But he's a candidate now, under a more extremist leader who has railed against COVID restrictions and is trying to get penalties for violators reversed.
@acoyne thanks for this piece. I think you have found an answer to what is happening in AB. Contrarian attitudes plus religiosity, rising income inequality, perceived disenfranchisement, and education/health care failure in the province is a toxic mix. We need good journalism, and factual reporting, more than ever right now. #abpoli #abelection2023 #alberta
