We took a chance moving to #Alberta before the results of the election… and honestly… I’d still make the move for a number of reasons.
I’m disappointed with the results, especially as a queer disabled person, but (for us) the move to be closer to family was still an absolute necessity.
It’s a shit provincial political outcome but I’m still excited to call Edmonton home tomorrow.
Ok back to sleep. 💤

After a 28-day campaign that pinned the UCP's Danielle Smith against the NDP's Rachel Notley, election day in Alberta is finally here.
For the latest updates from Globe reporters on the ground, follow along our live blog: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/alberta/article-alberta-election-2023-live-updates/
Today is election day in Alberta. As is tradition, we’re going to watch the results with my mother-in-law. She has a masters in political science, ran a union, sat on town council for years (including two terms as mayor), and once ditched her car with a “follow me, I’m NDP” bumper sticker on the back.
What hashtag are we using for this? (Don’t worry, I’ll hide my posts for those of you that don’t want spoilers - or politics!)
Danielle Smith (UCP leader) has a long history of advocating for a user pay, for profit, health care system. Do NOT vote for the UCP...you cannot afford their health care!

@keithzg , what's going on with the election? Not about who's winning, but what are the issues people argue about? Is anyone promising to put oil royalties into the #HeritageFund to get the provincial budget off the boom/bust cycles?

"The federal government is on standby to help, if needed, Smith said."
Oh so NOW you're ok with the federal government being involved in Alberta's affairs?

This is the kind of stupid we are up against in #abpoli, people.
People like this are why sensible conversation about actual issues can’t be had. The real discussion here is “where is the govt, and why haven’t they declared a state of emergency?”.
(Short answer: because TBA and DS like the idea of people being off-balance so they can’t look seriously at the utter disaster that a TBA controlled UCP govt would be).

So … according to Danielle Smith, we’re supposed to just ignore her, and her party’s long stated goals and policies?
https://globalnews.ca/news/9677045/smith-removes-sovereignty-act-ucp-campaign/
Think about that for a moment - she’s basically saying “oh, that’s not on the table until after the election”. So, it’s not off the table really, she’s just refusing to talk about it. /1
Prediction from 2CloseToCall for the #abelxn23 :

They don't stand much of a chance against the incumbent, at least, but it's still so confusing how otherwise good people can support the UCP when the party is so explicitly working against virtually every single one of their interests.
And to decide to run under that banner AFTER Smith became party leader?
It's beyond my ability to comprehend.

An acquaintance of mine whom I've worked with on some local community-building and urban planning projects and committees is running in this election ...as a UCP candidate.
This person is a registered nurse by trade.
I'm having a lot of trouble understanding how they can reconcile their trade and their passion for community with a party that is anti-urban, divisive, and for rugged individual liberty that is moving toward privatizing healthcare.

I took the CBC VoteCompass survey this morning - my thoughts:
They basically took the UCP positions and used them to formulate questions - in essence, the “issues” ended up being whatever the UCP has been braying on about.
… and lurking in the midst of all of it is a decidedly off-putting bit of transphobia.
I am unimpressed.
A few thoughts on the #TBA controlled #UCP in light of the #abelxn23 now underway.
https://crystalgaze2.blogspot.com/2023/05/the-darker-side-of-ucp-policy.html
Vote as if someone near you is going to be targeted by the TBA crowd ... because it will happen.
Just to be clear - when politicians are talking _OPENLY_ about exerting political control over the police, they are talking about discarding the concept of “rule of law”. Down this road lies very dark things - things that Hitler’s Germany were witness to.

To be clear, when I am talking about defeating the #UCP as an absolute, it’s because with #TBA in control, the party is arguably no longer conservative at all.
I have seen enough eliminationist rhetoric in Telegram groups associated with TBA and adjacent to TBA to be quite certain that this puts them firmly in the camp of ChristoFascism - and that’s a danger to everybody.

Smith is a reflection of what political conservatism has become.
The time to put the brakes on this was in 2015 when Kenney started courting every far-right malcontent he could find, and whipping up people’s fears and insecurities.
Smith is not a conservative in the sense of any of her PCAA predecessors, in that the authors are correct. But she is exactly what conservatism has become.

Everytime a conservative govt gets involved in a major “public works” deal, you can practically hear the pork barrels being opened up.
In #Calgary’s new arena “deal”, we get this lovely bunch of pork barrel politicking going into an election:

Once again, with Danielle Smith, the devil is _ALWAYS_ in the details.
