I was talking to a friend recently about the return of in-person only conferences with no mitigations, and we started sharing our experiences of at them in the era before the .

If the push to end is from people who can't stand their children and spouses, then I can't help but wonder if the push for in-person only conferences is coming from predatory people. Or as my friend and I put it: "The people who want in-person work hate their kids and spouse, and the people who want in-person conferences hate their kids and spouses and want to cheat."

Anyway, , and I refuse to risk disability and death just so somebody else can hit on people for a weekend and gain some weird sense of petty power in the . Instead we should , since people seem to dislike it so much.

I keep coming back to this article, "Romantic Is Killing Us: thebodyisnotanapology.com/maga

"I have never felt incomplete or alone without a romantic partner, but...I recognize that these [ ] benefits are not purely financial or physical. They are about daily and mundane interpersonal interactions of reciprocity. In short: investment, and care."

"The family is a shield that human beings have taken up, quite rightly, to survive a war. If we cannot countenance ever putting down that shield, perhaps we have forgotten that the war does not have to go on forever." - Sophie Lewis, Abolish The Family

"When Margaret Thatcher, the 'milk snatcher' of the eighties, said 'There is no such thing as society, there are individual men and women and there are families,' she wasn’t so much (alas) winning an argument against anti-family foes as triumphally making a capitalist reality explicit. That which is 'social' is not simply anti-profitability but anti-family, she implies." - Sophie Lewis, Abolish The Family

"Without family, in short, no bourgeois state. The family’s function is to replace welfare and to guarantee debtors. Masquerading as the choice, creation, and desire of individuals, the family is a method for cheaply arranging the reproduction of the nation’s labor-power and securing debt repayments." - Sophie Lewis, Abolish The Family

Why do we, as a society, allow the raising of children by untrained people whose only claim to such rights is sharing DNA?

We wouldn't let untrained doctors operate on us, nor untrained mechanics fondle our cars to fix them, nor would we want untrained teachers to teach us.

Yet, in the realm of the family we let untrained parents rule over their progeny with little interference. They are basically free to damage the next generation, to punish them for not conforming to the wishes of the parent(s). In essence, people are free to rear damaged individuals for the sake of ... what? DNA?

What is so special about their DNA that parents need to have full control over a person? To remove them from their community, to have them be forced into an unequal situation compared to their peers?

Conveniently, this is a by-product of promoting atomisation of the individual to sell more of everything.

Atomisation has lead us to the average worker being forced to both hold down a job and raise children, leaving them little time to organise with their community or their fellow workers or even learn how to properly parent. Forcing them to only depend upon themselves and maybe their extended family for support.

This creates a cycle of poor parenting and only feeds the flames of capitalism further.
