Lately, there are lots of posts about transitioning out of #academia

For me, it was relatively easy, even if it wasn't what I wanted at the time.

Couldn't get a postdoc, and I couldn't afford to be unemployed, so I got a teaching job at an FE college, which I hated.
I left at the end of the first term and got a temping job with Aviva.

To this day, it's one of the best jobs I have had. It was the first place I worked where bullying wasn't tolerated (worked in too many of THOSE places).

Aaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhh!!!! TFW internal deadlines are way earlier than the funding agency's deadline and somehow you fail to notice until damn near last minute. No sleep til submission. #academia #AcademicChatter

Search committees shouldn’t request letters of recommendation from candidates until the phone interview stage, at the earliest. Take the pressure off of the candidates, their mentors, and the committee members.

I'm finding a negative correlation with the number of full professors present and the likelihood that a meeting will actually take place without being moved at least once.

This negative correlation is exacerbated wildly if a dean is to be present.

(disclaimer: I do realize everyone is doing what they can. This is about too many meetings at all levels of academia.)

I was trying to figure out how to teleport in order to fit in a meeting with many busy people, that could only be at that one specific time which is inconvenient but not impossible for me so I said "yes".... and now the meeting has been moved to a time *much* easier for me.

Yesterday I was visiting the museum of cinema in #Torino. I was amazed to discover that Camille Flammarion was using the magic lantern during his scientific conferences:

I read a work email at 10:30pm, that was an hour ago. I am still angry at what it said and also frustrated that I read it on a SUNDAY NIGHT. (It was sent a few hours earlier by the interim dept chair who works on weekends, I guess.) /sigh/ taking some breaths with Milli purring on my lap is helping. Is caring this much a gift or a liability? Maybe both.
