but actually there's a factor of 1/2, which comes from the order charges are introduced.

Another way to see it is: if you have some charges sitting on a potential hill and you want to extract energy from them, the first few give about qV(x), but as you remove more charge, the hill also starts shrinking. So the average charge only gives 1/2 qV_original(x)
