Recently watched the excellent doc on #NewMexico’s #acequias on #PBS entitled “Acequias: The Legacy Lives On”. Do other states have aspects of their history and culture this interesting and culturally endearing? If they do, I must have missed them. The communal aspects of the acequias of this state are, dare I say it, inspiring in this day and age.

Dug between the 8th and 10th centuries, in the Muslim era, thousands of acequias channeled for centuries the waters of rivers, rain, and those from the melting of snow to supply the fields and villages of Spain by gravity irrigation, before falling into disuse from the 1960s.

The irrigation communities of New Mexico, Spain, and the Philippines are long-enduring #commons. They were instrumental in informing Elinor #Ostrom's ideas about collaborative governance.
