@pandanus @Sustainable2050 Sai should certainly not stop cutting down on fuel burning. It can only buy us some time.
Do you perhaps have scientific sources on how much ocean food chains can take? If so I would certainly like to read that. It is important is never seen as a quick fix, cause it cannot last

Some have cast doubt on the ’s findings, with China recently arguing that the group’s assessment “is not proof of the legality and legitimacy” of Fukushima’s wastewater release.

By Jessie Yeung, Mayumi Maruyama and Emiko Jozuka, July 5, 2023

"Robert H. Richmond, director of the Kewalo Marine Laboratory at the University of at Manoa, is among a group of international scientists working with the to assess the wastewater release plan – including visits to the Fukushima site, and meetings with TEPCO, Japanese authorities and the IAEA. After reviewing the details of the plan, Richmond called it 'ill-advised' and premature.

"One concern is that diluting the wastewater might not be enough to reduce its impact on marine life. like tritium can pass through various levels of the – including plants, animals, and bacteria – and be ',' meaning they will build up in the marine , he said.

"And the potential risks won’t just affect the region. One 2012 study found evidence that bluefin had transported – radioactive isotopes like the ones in – from Fukushima across the Pacific to California."

@mazzeri well done! I agree, you are being conservative in your estimate. With multiple tipping points of major oceanic-atmospheric systems already crossed by now e.g. , , , , , it is clear that "the sky's the limit" in terms of impending climate destruction an human-caused destruction of our planet. Which says nothing about and loss. Or . Or, or, or ... The best guess is that the will have completely broken down ca. 2050, quite possibly sooner. We are already in uncharted territory now, so to talk about future uncharted territory ... it beggars belief, especially as so much of this destruction has already been programmed by humans into systems ... thoroughly enervating.

Fascinating global analysis by Joseph Poore. It exposes the inefficiency of the current food system, and shows that a system would reduce global by more than 75%, freeing up vast areas of land for .

First life cycle assessment for as reveals significant impacts on the environment

"A dog weighing 15 kilograms produces some 8.2 tons of CO2 over the course of a 13-year lifespan. These 8.2 tons of CO2 are the equivalent of 13 return flights from Berlin to Barcelona and almost as much as the CO2 emitted in the production of a mid-class luxury car, such as a Mercedes C250"

“The 8.2 tons of CO2 produced over 13 years equate to an annual CO2 emission of 630 kilograms. If we place these 630 kilograms of CO2 in the context of the two tons per year indicated as environmentally acceptable for humans by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, then every dog owner can see that almost one third of their CO2 budget is already used up by their dog.”

“The ton of fecal matter and 2,000 liters of urine produced by a dog over a lifetime of 13 years further impact the environment.”

Reductions in surface water pH are observed across the global ocean.

The increasing ocean is already impacting marine organisms.

"As an effective means of oceanic CO2 capture, we report an asymmetric electrochemical system employing bismuth and silver electrodes that can capture and release chloride..The difference in reaction stoichiometry between the two electrodes enables an electrochemical system architecture for a chloride-mediated electrochemical pH swing, which can be leveraged for effective removal of CO2 from oceanwater without costly bipolar membranes"

Watching the film "Breaking Boundaries" right now 😱 🎬

It's a well made summary of the "planetary boundaries" that define a world in which humans can flourish. There are several numerical thresholds, and too many of them have already been crossed. That means we are reaching tipping points, beyond which nobody can really predict that will happen — but obviously nothing good.

It's a netflix documentary, and I don't have netflix, so I'm late to the party. The film is from 2021. Apparently it has not shocked the world into action. No need to tell everybody to watch it then I guess. There's also a book for those who like to read.

I've worked underground in caves and mines where historical industrial processing left lime on the surface. When dissolved, this lime reacted with atmospheric carbon dioxide and formed limestone. In my case, as very fast growing stalagmites.

And the same process seems to work in the oceans according to this story in the journal Science:

Want to see the fast growing stalagmites? Visit Poole's Cavern in the UK. There must be other places....
