Beautiful nature in a historicsl landscape. The sea line was 5 meters higher during the Viking age, and was even higher earlier on. #Fornstigen #Lovön #Drottningholm #landscapephotography #nature #NaturePhotography #Naturetherapy #NatureBeauty #trees #woods #acorns

It's #acorn season again. The squirrels will be happy.

5/5 In #Languodoc and #Italy, #HolmOaks also live in close association with #Truffles, which thrive between the roots of the trees, and are of course foraged by #pigs, which also, I imagine, eat the #Acorns. Another great example of #AgroEcology #Agroforestry, positive, symbiotic relations between plants, animals, humans that have evolved over time. Found this article really informative but am not an expert on this at all - if anyone knows more, please do add!

@zeborah This reminds me of seeing the mortars ground into rock by the indigenous people of California as they ground acorns and other seeds into flour. It must have been hard work.
I saw these at the Idyllwild Nature Centre in the San Jacinto mountains of California. They're called chaw’se by the Miwok people of northern California. I'm not sure what southern Californian people called them.

@zeborah I just found this paper on wood ducks eating acorns where they looked at whether the ducks preferred acorns with lower levels of tannins. And, no, they didn't.
"Acorn selection by female wood ducks seemed independent of tannin concentrations in acorns" and the ducks may be "physiologically adapted to tannin levels in the acorns". There was no "major decrease in wood duck body mass despite abundant consumption of willow oak acorns".
Earlier today, I spotted a mother deer and her year-old fawn, plus another mum and her twin year-old fawns, on a playdate hunting for acorns in our backyard. Reminded me of when my son was little and had friends over this time of year.

I NEED this. All I would have to do is pop the trunk of my car, put in the back and like the Pied Piper, lead them all away! 🐿️

Squirrel Book Back Cover
I have one last thing to share on this book project. The back cover is a drawing of squirrel tracks in the snow with a couple of acorns. The back cover text and barcode go in the blank areas.

Three views of a secret: how the acorn cap develops as a highly condensed system of branches surrounding the pistillate flower (then, the nut of the acorn). Every scale is a branch tip, coalesced during development.

Made the #acorns into a porridge, with about equal amounts acorns and oats. Topped with banana and honey.
It was... good! Genuinely, *really* good. Way better than porridge from oats on their own.
The acorns provided a really good texture and mouth-feel, and added just a hint of nutty and earthy flavours.
After being concerned that it would be bland or unpalatable, I couldn't be happier with the end result.
I'm looking forward to eating a lot more acorns in the future! #foraging
And now, after much boiling and changing of water, *and* a couple of nights cold soaking in the fridge, the #acorns have lost all their bitterness.
They've also lost all other flavours as well, so while this first attempt has made something edible, they're very very bland. Not unpleasant, just bland.
These will probably go into a porridge or soup to provide texture. The next batch I'm going to try cold soaking, which takes longer, but I hear keeps much more flavour.
Southern live oak acorn noodles, (Quercus virginiana) with black sesame and wheat
Kombu dashi infused steamed daylily bulbs (hemerocallis) with culantro (Eryngium foetidum)
Redbud flowers (Cercis canadensis)
Spread the word: daylily bulbs are easy to peel after steaming but not before.

A dish that maybe @loren would love?
I call it “Earthworm in the garden.” (Southern live oak noodle) Quercus virginiana
In an effort to keep a composite noodle from breaking, I wound up with noodles that look like earthworms. Oops. 🥹🤣
In my defense, it ended up tasting pretty good.
