Well, Heather McGee brought me to tears.
This framing knocked me out: The more we're willing to see the darkness in our past, "the more we are able to see the stars." The more we're able to see those who made moral choices against great odds.
Husband thinks they should have offered ketchup shots & ketchup cocktails at the ACRL soiree at the Heinz History museum.
Librarians have done weirder things. #acrl2023
Multiple presenters at #acrl2023 have included variations on the phrase "I thought I should ask ChatGPT what they would say about [presentation topic]." What an odd cultural moment.
Eileen Joy at #acrl2023 is fucking literally everything up :blobhyperthink:
(in a good way)
Last one for now. The panel session this morning "Academic Library Leaders Discuss Difficult Topics" was fantastic. Great insights from Jee Davis, Trevor Dawes, and Violeta Ilik. It got me thinking about different approaches to having real and frank conversations about expectations toward transparency & communication. The session was hybrid, so it was recorded for re-viewing. #acrl2023
From the same panel session, I liked the advice from Matthew Shaw to say "Invest to advance" rather than "cost to support" and to consistently use "advance" rather than "support" to emphasize how the library moves the institution forward. #acrl2023
Hearing great examples, perspectives, and quotes at ACRL.
Some favorites:
In talking about describing library value, Wanda K. Brown called front-line workers the "keepers of the stories" due to their daily interactions with the students, with faculty. Love that framing. #acrl2023

Do I know anyone going to #acrl2023 #acrl23 who teaches (or wants to be teaching) text analysis? I can't go (shoutout to #c4l23), but I work on https://constellate.org/ , a platform for learning & teaching text/data/coding. People use it to teach library-based workshops, integrate these skills w/faculty classes, and offer classes taught by our experts to their staff & community. Some of my colleagues will be at ACRL. Want an intro? Hit me up.
Only two weeks to go until @ACRL2023! Are you attending? Let us know! #ACRL2023
