👀 Observer’s Role – In Explainer-Observer style, the Observer isn’t just a spectator. Their role is to actively challenge the Explainer’s decisions. It’s not just about watching; it’s about engaging and understanding.

@sipho I think those things you listed are better termed "retrieval practice". is a method of teaching: "instructional activities involving students in doing things and thinking about what they are doing” Bonwell and Eison, 1991)

It's common to think of historical narratives as *mere* stories, and to think interpretation is something different. It's also common to treat and as opposites. So here's a simple activity I developed to show how constructing a narrative is an interpretive act—and to draw students into the work of the lecture. bluebook.life/2023/04/22/story

One could lecture about , quoting the founder, summarizing news stories, playing key clips.

One could also ask students to research biographies of three key figures within the movement (5 minutes) and then surprise them with a make-a-skit request (10 minutes).

Which do YOU think will have more energy???

(okay, we also did the lecture/discussion part...)

The latest episode of the Teaching for Student Success podcast: Louis Deslauriers, lead author of this 2019 paper "Measuring actual learning versus feeling of learning in response to being actively engaged in the classroom". Students actually like active learning done well. The problem is that they will rate their learning in a well-delivered, fluent lecture more highly than a well-designed active-learning experience covering identical material. The paper: doi.org/10.1073/pnas.182193611

Active learning classrooms can be powerful tools for institutional change - or just another misused technology. What makes the difference? At the blog today, a report on a research study that looks at those differences.

ML beyond big data is great, and as "AI" gets more attention, these areas hopefully also get a boost.

I’m interested by the idea that eventually people and companies may have fine-tuned assistants that learn by the suggestions that their users accept.

For example, a company could implicitly bake-in their in-house APIs and coding style into a model to be shared company-wide. I think that could be a pretty big productivity win.

The Infinite Index allows IR experiments that were never possible on finite datasets, and makes scenarios possible. However, many challenges remain: E.g., using recall-oriented measures is difficult, and near-duplicate images will require deduplication. (7/8)
