The first poster session of #smbe2023 is tonight, in person in 2 venues (Estense castle and San Paulo cloisters), and also online in gathertown. Iâm presenting my work on an active learning activity I use to teach #evolution to undergraduate students. It is in Session 21- Science For Everybody: Education and Outreach in Molecular Biology and Evolution. Poster 17 in person and poster 1 within session 21 on Gather! #ActiveLearning #DBER #TeachingAndLearning

@sipho I think those things you listed are better termed "retrieval practice". #ActiveLearning is a method of teaching: "instructional activities involving students in doing things and thinking about what they are doingâ Bonwell and Eison, 1991)

It's common to think of historical narratives as *mere* stories, and to think interpretation is something different. It's also common to treat #lectures and #ActiveLearning as opposites. So here's a simple #HistoryTeaching activity I developed to show how constructing a narrative is an interpretive actâand to draw students into the work of the lecture. https://bluebook.life/2023/04/22/storytelling-and-interpretation-a-classroom-activity/ #pedagogy #histodons

One could lecture about #ElSistema, quoting the founder, summarizing news stories, playing key clips.
One could also ask students to research biographies of three key figures within the movement (5 minutes) and then surprise them with a make-a-skit request (10 minutes).
Which do YOU think will have more energy???
(okay, we also did the lecture/discussion part...)

"... study after study demonstrates that students learn more from active learning than from lecturesâand that the positive effects of active learning are especially pronounced for historically marginalized groups."

The latest episode of the Teaching for Student Success podcast: Louis Deslauriers, lead author of this 2019 paper "Measuring actual learning versus feeling of learning in response to being actively engaged in the classroom". Students actually like active learning done well. The problem is that they will rate their learning in a well-delivered, fluent lecture more highly than a well-designed active-learning experience covering identical material. Active learning classrooms can be powerful tools for institutional change - or just another misused technology. What makes the difference? At the blog today, a report on a research study that looks at those differences. #highereducation #activelearning

ML beyond big data is great, and as "AI" gets more attention, these areas hopefully also get a boost.

Iâm interested by the idea that eventually people and companies may have fine-tuned #ai assistants that learn by the suggestions that their users accept.
For example, a company could implicitly bake-in their in-house APIs and coding style into a model to be shared company-wide. I think that could be a pretty big productivity win.

The Infinite Index allows IR experiments that were never possible on finite datasets, and makes #ActiveLearning scenarios possible. However, many challenges remain: E.g., using recall-oriented measures is difficult, and near-duplicate images will require deduplication. (7/8)
