It applies to me. I learned languages, math and mostly everything as an autodidact.

School and what came later didn't fit me. I looked at the exercises and the books to learn it. It was easier for me.

Are all Autistics autodidacts? Is that just a thing we do?

I'm waiting for a phone call whilst currently non-verbal.

How do other handle this situation? Power through and talk / be verbal, then rest?

Something to which I've never admitted, and here I am posting it publicly...

How many of we have quietly, secretly nursed the dream that we could reach people with some talent? Singing? Playing an instrument? Writing? Use some innate talent or skill to connect in ways we can't seem to manage otherwise?

I'm curious to know what types of rituals keep other on some sort of daily rhythm. My big one for the past year has been streaming radio shows. I wake up to WFMU's Wake and Bake, which drives me to get through work. On Sunday afternoons when I need to get back energy, I put on Hipbilly Jamboree on WXNA. Extra bonus, it gets me out of the "same old playlist" funk!

Funny how many only promote and read nonfiction written by autistics.

Autistics write fiction too.

There’s a lot of them out there.

I hope he'll advertise his chip by saying: "Heyo people, here's a microchip you can insert into your brain, if you want to become more like me!"?🤪

Umm...no, thanks...I'd like to try acceptance and equality first.

Just a quick little note. What I noticed is a strength when focusing on is just that *focus*.

Focus is important. New knowledge is often gained when focusing with high intensity in a small area of new knowledge.

I think that focusing first on autism/autistics/#ActuallyAutistic, is gonna make me get to my goal faster. I'm not trying to prove all Neurotypes, I'm gonna try to prove a few...and others can focus on other areas.

I'm not gonna attach medical language to people since I'm going for , and those don't need medical language cause guess what?

Neurotypes! 👏

I submitted a proposal to include the Neurodivergent and Autistic symbols in the default set of software. You can read it here:

“Building a More Inclusive Future: Adding Neurodivergent and Autistic Symbols to Fediverse Default Emojis”

codeberg.org/fediverse/fediver

It was also added in as “Accessibility and Diversity best-practices” by Arnold Schrijver (@-smallcircles@social.coop ). It is available here: github.com/gabek/fedidocs/issu

Please reshare/boost/retoot, and hopefully we can all work together to achieve this goal.

Have a great day everyone!

@crysophylax @paleocontinent @britt @autisticadvocacy I've been told 'you're overthinking it' more times than I can remember, in-person, by an annoyed non-Autistic person.

I only use the term 'underthinking' amongst to describe the frustration we feel in communicating with a person who doesn't include all the details we need.

Then when we ask for the details we're told, 'you're overthinking it'.

If I just say 'thinking' it doesn't cover what I'm trying to say!

There is something horrendously stressful going on in my personal life, it's brought me to my knees.

I haven't talked about it online because I don't want to 'torpedo' the Book Club.

I fear it would be 'too much' for many people, and they'd leave.

And the whole purpose of the Book Club was to create a place of community and connection for

I don't want to destroy that.

It wasn't about me. I was supposed to be the invisible scaffolding holding it up.

I'm so tired.

@stephenczetty @actuallyautistic I think, as a group we’re quite interested in spirituality but we don’t like being told what to do, especially when it doesn’t make sense!

So any organised religion, especially a patriarchal one, is going to be difficult.

Being curious and asking questions when you’re a member of a religion is seen as arguing, unfortunately. I think religions in general need to be more understanding of

Like many of us struggling around the world with a cost of living crisis and us being socially disabled, I've once again taken a leaf out of @ashleyspencer's book. I have added 4 digital downloads to buy me a ☕ which you can see here: buymeacoffee.com/dquinn03M/ext

As previously mentioned I have a subscription newsletter coming out darrenquinn.substack.com

and today I created darrenquinn.theprintbar.com/ with t-shirts and a mug for sale

@RenoirDana
As you pointed out some people may not be aware of the issue, that's one of the reasons I fell compelled to yet again write this disclaimer which is also a SUBtoot (rewrite may I add, the original version was written with 2022, not 2023, and here I am again pressing delete & redraft on account of yet another controversy on the subject that happened not even 48 hours ago) that's also the reason I took the time to add some wikipedia links to it when asked and am taking the time to answer to you politely.

It's 2023 and we still have to push back against that terminology daily, on this network, in the workplace, with allistic and autistic relatives alike, sometimes with well meaning friends not to mention the richest man in the world (you know the white supremacist who labeled himself as such when presenting SNL and claims he will "cure autism" with a chip that killed monkeys by the dozens, and bought the so-called "town square" to push his agenda)

This toot is a disclaimer, so that I don't have to constantly be re-triggered, so that I don't have to constantly feel bad when I choose to protect myself and refuse to interact with some people with Aspie adjacent usernames in my replies, because I do not always have the spoons to push back, even less so to do it nicely.
As mentioned the original version stated 2022 and was until recently pinned to my profile. You are talking to a trans person who also happens to be french-german and who has been bullied on account of her gender identity, her autistic traits but also her German accent and been called not only the slurs that you can imagine on account of the above mentioned traits but also a Nazi since her earliest childhood (up until senior high school may I add). Something that combined with her father making a big deal of his distant Jewish origins made her develop out of misplaced guilt a very peculiar special interest for the history of the Holocaust by age 8 and then spent their junior high school lunch breaks away from bullies in the library reading on that specific subject.

I did mention in two of the above comments that for some it was understandably hard to let go of the label, that being said if I could / felt compelled to face the history of the Holocaust and it's horrors and overcome being unfairly linked to it before I even hit puberty, on account of traits I was born with, I have every confidence that my elders who granted, did not choose the terminology they were diagnosed with can do so too.

Finally: I was specifically referring to self identifying with this term and of it's use in usernames/bios, something that is far too common on this platform, which of course normalizes it's usage amongst allistic people and younger people alike ("but my friend uses that word" "but my brother's son's friend is" "But I saw it on this popular autistic meme page" "But " etc.) something that we then in turn have to push back against online and irl (and has caused me quite a few meltdowns in the workplace btw).

So yes for some of us, that word will indeed be extremely triggering and we don't particularly wish to have that conversation over and over again -or like to be tone policed btw. (if you fail to understand why such is the case for me you obviously missed a paragraph)

The fact that you brought up tatoos in relationship with this very specific subject is frankly indecent (and tbh at first glance screams either bait or dogwhistle, so for the record this IS me being kind) That being said as someone whose body-art is constantly being expanded, do know that while none of my tatoos have ever been problematic I did tire of the meaning of some of the earliest, I outgrew them and did not identify with some of them anymore: that's what cover ups are for.
They can be a very liberating experience, even when the original work doesn't feature the name of a litteral fucking doctor.

Anyhow, this toot is there because "I identify as tired"

I’ve made it a goal to be the first follower of everyone who joins my autistics.life instance.

I get notifications when someone joins, so it’s an easy go to their new profile and follow.

My instance is a small community, as this server has been live for 9 days now.

Even as it grows, I’ll still rush over to be the first follower of new community members.

The whole " don't have empathy" thing oft said is BS
