I'm combining studying for an actuarial exam with doing my femme voice training by doing my flash cards out loud and I wonder if there's a fetish market for recordings of a struggling transsexual Mickey Mouse voice explaining which employee benefits count as taxable income.
Time for another #introduction as I've just moved to a new server. I mainly boost and post about #climate and #sustainability, especially in the financial services sector - which should be serving society, rather than the other way round. I'm an #actuary by training, and have also worked in #software and #AI. Currently involved with the #Ecology Building Society - striving for a fair society in a sustainable world.

Okay so #introductions post for real now even though it's my second post here. I was never a twitter user so inline hashtags look awful to me, but I'll do my best.
My name's Kira (she/her), and I'm an #actuary by trade (i.e. risk management and mathematical modeling for insurance companies), and in my free time I write a lot of #fanfic. And I do mean a lot, on the order of 2*10^5 words/year. I'm at Flamesong on #AO3 as well.
I'm #trans, #lesbian, #Jewish, #autistic, and you can talk to me in English, #Spanish, #German, or #Hebrew and expect a nonzero amount of comprehension. I suppose you could also try Hungarian, but I was only in Budapest for one semester (math people can guess why) and my language skills at this point are less than epsilon.
In terms of other things I do and like, I've started doing #KravMaga this year, I go out bike riding during the handful of days of pleasant temperatures we get per year, and of course there are the omnipresent, dreaded video games. I like games that make you think in a math way like Satisfactory, games that make you think in a literary-analysis way like Dark Souls, and games that make you think in a strategy way like Civ6.
I see my character limit is starting to run a little low now (though using the smallest number that can be written as the sum of two cubes in two different ways is great), so I'll leave the intro post there. I can't wait to meet some new people here on Mastodon!

Got a good #statistician challenge for a fan of #actuary #actuarial studies, #age and #aging — how is this line best described?
It's all about a funny inverse relationship to "risk of death" (within a year) to the "added life expectancy" (bonus days of life) you can expect as you make it to your next birthday — while others around you do not.
Congratulations, you made through the Filter — you're one of the stronger ones, on principle.
There's clearly a well-known thing of "it's great to be 10", where the lifelong measurement of risk-of-dying is at its all-time lowest.
But, so, what's this flattening at age 20 through 30? Only seen easily in logarithmic scale … but in fact, if looking at women only, it goes *DOWN* slightly — what!?
I need help translating this into plain English too: Does it mean a 30-year-old woman is more sensible than a 21-year-old woman?
I can see how the teenage years filter very quickly, and the years after 30+ are normal. But how would you describe it?

I lead data scientists in the insurance industry and one thing we struggle with (myself included!) is learning, and having at the ready, relevant actuarial jargon and definitions.
Do you have a resource such as a cheat sheet for folks like me to help grasp and reference the many concepts in the field? I'd be grateful for anything you can share! 🙏

In the far future we will all be gone. Some species will survive us, and this is one of them. It adapted our technology to preserve the last of some famous fruits, berries and nuts. They keep them in their form of zoo, because why not :).

Not good to see. From the USA.
I've said for some time no matter what extent people go to hide the numbers, the actuaries will see it, and then organisations will act.
Quote:
“We’re seeing right now the highest death rates we’ve ever seen in the history of this business,” said Scott Davison, the CEO of OneAmerica, a $100 billion life insurance and retirement company headquartered in Indianapolis.
“The data is consistent across every player in the business.”
Davison said death rates among working age people – those 18 to 64-years-old – are up 40 percent in the third and fourth quarter of 2021 over pre-pandemic levels.

I guess it was time for a lesson in counting my chickens before they hatch, as it looks like I have one more exam left in my #actuary journey. I would have bet money that I passed this exam, and I in fact bet my time with the obligations I've taken on. I am legitimately stunned and have no idea what parts of this material I misunderstood. Here's to an incredibly stressful first half of the year as I try to finish this credential and not disappoint all the people I've made commitments to.
Any other actuaries out there in the fediverse living that exam-prep life? I am now accepting any distractions from studying.
#Introduction time!
I’m a husband, father of 3 young children, and an #actuary by day.
I found #meditation in an effort to manage #anxiety, then explored various philosophical/#spiritual rabbit holes, all in the vicinity of #Buddhism (#Headspace , #ShinzenYoung , #RobertWright , #Zen #dharma study), though I stop short of calling myself a #Buddhist .
I’m in search of a community that shares a Buddhist-ish world-view to just chat and hang out here in the midst of 21st century western culture.

Hi all, a quick reintroduction. I'm an #actuary who's very interested in the intersection of computing, bayesian stats, and economics. After several years of Python and R usage, I've found a home in #julialang and am the primary author/maintainer of [JuliaActuary](https://juliaactuary.org/)
@monimiller @kevinzenghu @ianfahey ooh thanks for sharing. I'm excited to meet a fellow #actuary here!
Ok, two days in and it's time to do my formal #introduction.
👋🏾I'm Toju from the UK and I lead a couple of #data teams at Zapier spanning #growth, revenue, finance, and customer support. Before this I was an #actuary for 10 years predicting death and convincing people to ditch #sas for #sql and #rstats.
Outside of work, I'm also a husband and a father to a 12 week old bundle of joy. So any #parenting tips are most welcome, particularly on how to return to work after 14 weeks of parental leave 😳

Last night was the welcome reception for my actuarial society’s annual meeting and I saw a friend from a prior job for the first time in over a decade. He hadn’t heard about my transition, but folks, the man handled it like a champ and we ended up catching up for a while over drinks. So nice when that happens!

Trying to get through these last 50 flashcards before going to bed. Big professional exam on Friday that has consumed me for two months now. So close to being done with this credential I've been working on for nearly a decade.
