This paragraph in an Axios article made me pause. When is it ever written out with no mention of the acronym? The acronym is what it is most known by, what it’s been most commonly called for over 30 years. Did the writer and editors know so little about the group that they didn’t realize it is the same org? Or didn’t know the acronym is more commonly used? If so, perhaps particularly ironic in an article on #lgbtq history.

Gaëtan Dugas (1953-1984) was a gay Canadian flight attendant and early HIV patient, who during the 1980s was labelled as “patient zero” for AIDS in the United States.

A researcher referred to Dugas as “patient O”, meaning “outside California” and not the number 0, Dugas was subsequently, and posthumously, blamed personally for the outbreak and spread of the disease in the United States.
