I learned from Adam Ragusea that Turkey Day 🦃 was created right before the US civil war in an attempt to create a shared holiday and culture between north and south to avoid open conflict. This did not work but Turkey Day was made a federal holiday during reconstruction.

Its fascinating how white washing past colonialism wasn't Turkey Day's original reason for existing (though that's what it does now.)
