Interesting. For the first time I have just seen a website popup/display saying that I was using an adblocker and needed to turn it off to view the website. I am using the DuckDuckGo browser which blocks trackers, but doesn't actually stop ads from displaying but am not using an actual AdBlocker.

Yes: Google seem to have plans to turn web browsers into DRM software - completely restricting AD blocking.
How would you feel about that?
If one continues supporting Chrome / Opera / Microsoft Edge (without even a requirement for it) it can happen faster.
Spoiler: it's planned => https://stackdiary.com/web-environment-integrity

Why #googledrm exists. Help site owners ensure users are using Google #chrome a 'trusted browser' that supports #ads and not block #googleads by defualt.
Some critical info for anyone using the open internet.
1. Chrome made it harder for users to block ads with Chrome #Extentions on websites, by downgrading #adblocking features, such as by forcing mv3
2. Google wants to blow up browsers like #Firefox and #Brave with web drm.
3. #Youtube made nearly impossible to use while blocking ads.

Forking Chromium would also let the new maintainer organizations plant a #flag and declare that the #BlockingWebRequest part of the extension API was here to stay. #Google is still trying to #kill that off with Manifest V3, specifically because doing so makes effective #adblocking impossible.

I learned that the #duckduckgo #app has a feature that sets up a local #vpn and redirects/blocks the #tracking of other apps that way.
No idea how well it works.
But it sounds reasonable to me.

#AdBlocking on the internet is no different to getting up to make tea or use the bathroom, or even channel hopping, during commercial breaks in TV shows; and let us not forget fast forwarding ads after recording a show.
Nope, it is not piracy and it is not immoral or unethical. Now if you were to download the content from an unauthorised source, that is another matter entirely.
🧵After a video by #LouisRossman, on whether or not #AdBlocking is #Piracy, I got some thoughts. (This isn't a response to the video, but I'll link it anyway.)
BTW., the thread lead to a blog post👇🏻, that's probably easier to read - with links and images in Technicolor™! (And no ads.😉)

To me, more interesting than if it's piracy/illegal is if it's ethical/right. And when evaluating something like that, I like to ask myself:
"Would it be ok if everyone did it?"

I’m just gonna say it, the day #YouTube roll this out widely is the day I delete my #Google account. YouTube is all I use it for. #AdBlocking is a privacy and security issue https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/29/23778879/youtube-videos-disabling-ad-blockers-detection
YouTube could be testing a three-strikes policy for ad blocking
The push it to make viewers buy YouTube Premium.
Some #YouTube users with ad blockers are seeing a new three-strikes popup menu while watching videos.

@carotte feels that way when I use someone else's browser / someone shows me something on their devices. 80% Ads, 20% relevant stuff.
Most infuriating is people showing me a video with the #YouTube app and as Ads roll in they scoff and go "oh what can we do right." Like, seriously? Don't you know any of the many different ways you can avoid these?
#adblocking is personal hygiene nowadays.
@newdefined Ja, https://bahnhof.se macht das mit nem entsprechenden #DNS...
Nachteil: Ist Lokalanbieter in #Stockholm.
Erschwerend kommt hinzu, dass #DNS allein nicht für #AdBlocking reicht!
Sonst würde einfach nur https://oisd.nl als #Blocklist reichen und mensch bräuchte nicht #uBlockOrigin & #NoScript!

uBlock Origin is now available as a Thunderbird Add-on (as of version 1.49.2). I use Thunderbird, so I installed the Add-on and imported by uBO settings from my Firefox set-up. Everything worked but for one point -- the non-uBlock Origin blocklists are not updating for me in Thunderbird (not an issue for me, but worth noting -- have not looked into why yet).
