One thing that was really great on #masto and then #pixelfed was the ability to use the browser.

As we're seeing new social media contenders(threads) illustrate, companies want you to use the app, not a browser. Far more data is available to them to exploit.

1. Not being an ad-driven experience
2. How moderation works in the Fediverse

I recently realized that my #blog, which is ad-free, was displaying ads because of #disqus. I hadn't noticed this before because I always use ad-blockers. Since I don't want ads on my blog, I have removed the comments. The purpose of my blog is not to make money from ads. Getting away from #BigTech companies in order to protect my own #privacy has been very difficult. Over the last year I have completed the process many have termed "deGoogling" your life on r/privacy.

It was definitely I massive challenge, first starting with my #email and #cloudstorage providers and slowly move over all of my apps to #opensource and #privacy respecting alternatives.

But one thing that I have noticed, is that these #opensource alternatives are often quite extensive when it comes to features which can make them overly complicated for people that just want their privacy back but keep it simple.

I just found this solution, made by a small team of developers. They released a suite of apps that are normally on your phone, but kept is simple for you.

Figured I'd update my profile with links to some of my old websites. First up, my old project blog from when I made an electric car back in 1995. Images are SOOOOO small! And ads. I’d forgot all about them. By the early 2000's I was making a few hundred a month off ads. A quick check shows next to nothing now. But they still show them, even if it's a PSA and the site makes no money.
So I turned them off. I don't need the dribble of coins, and the sites will look a lot calmer without them.
