is useful for fission-track cooling ages too -it's closure temperature is ~220°C (the temperature when the fission tracks are annealed away). John Garver's group at Union college (@geo_garver
) used ziron fission tracks to show that the same Adirondack rocks have been cooling since the late-Precambrian/Cambrian rifting of Rodinia.

can be used for dating geo processes; not only by the accumulation of radiogenic isotopes, but also from the accumulation of damage from the fission of uranium. Mary Roden-Tice (SUNY Plattsburgh) showed that the rocks in the Adirondack portion of the Grenville were near the surface (<100°C) by the Cretaceous (~100 million years ago).

“The word Adirondack is thought to come from the Mohawk word ha-de-ron-dah meaning ‘eaters of trees’. The word was used by the Iroquois as a derogatory term for groups of Algonquians who did not practice agriculture and therefore sometimes had to eat tree bark to survive harsh winters.”

My thing to look forward to: There's an out of the way babbling brook near the Mountains of When spring comes, I'm going to take myself there, sit and gaze at the water rushing over the rocks and just breathe in the sounds and air. I'm bringing a can of Pizza flavored Pringles® with me.

As warms, dissolved oxygen levels in are declining. A shorter lake ice season and longer stratification period are to blame, but bathymetry (depth profiles) may affect the sensitivity of individual lakes. Bad news for species. adirondackexplorer.org/stories

@ChiefGenealogist Yes! My father, both grandfathers, an uncle and my mom all worked for the New York Central RR. In their retirement, both Mom and Dad volunteered on the Scenic Railroad for about 20 years.

I've uploaded them to for expert attention.

First up, this gilled growing out of the trunk of a fallen hemlock, which was itself sprouting new growth.

It's fascinating to learn about mining towns in the 1800s. Once wasn't an option, the houses were turned into lodges. Many of these towns are now ghost towns and most of the buildings have collapsed.
