Common loons lose their flight feathers as a part of their molt - if a loon fails to make it to open water by the time they molt, they can get 'iced in', trapped by encroaching ice with no chance of survival. Yesterday an iced in loon was captured and brought to safety in the Adirondacks of New York - props to the rescuers!

Exceedingly friendly nuthatches and chickadees on a fairly remote trail in the Adirondack Mountains of New York - i couldn't even use my binoculars without a bird coming and perching on them.
