I’m not that unhappy with #macOS, and the grass is always greener on the other side, but indie apps aren’t as vibrant an ecosystem as they were in the 2000s, so I wonder if looking into #GNOME would bring some of that joy of #Adium and #Growl and the likes back.

Is there such a thing as #Adium that still works? I'm holding on to a Tw*tter account simply to DM people. Looking into Wire again but I believe they use Amazon servers. Which is a big no-no.

- not of the Amazon/Alphabet/Mega/… type

What‘s the editor you are using there?

@chucker Don't tell anyone but some of us are still using #Adium, it is the only decent MacOS software that still supports XMPP!

Things change and people move on (several #Adium devs went on to work at Apple), but I do think we’ve lost an app that

• was native
• was OSS
• had people put thought into UX *and* whimsy
• supported many protocols

It was never good at file transfers, audio/video were always mere plans for the future, and it predated the E2EE era.

But maybe some day, we can have something as good again.

Seven years ago, I asked on Twitter if #Adium was still being developed, and perhaps needed a Kickstarter. (It was basically dead then.)

Today, Twitter itself is dying.

I guess at least Adium wasn’t bought by some annoying billionaire?

First the capitalist internet takes away our free tools.

Then the capitalist internet tries to sell back to us what they took away.

I only vaguely remember having used #Twitterrific (moved to Echofon at some point, then was on Tweetbot for a long, long time), but I knew I once made a bunch of hacks to retrofit additional features. But I didn’t quite remember when and *what*. Apparently,

* all the way back in Jan ‘07! My account was but a few days old
* setting the instant messenger status in #Adium, iChat, and Skype up your latest tweet after tweeting 🤯
* various shortcuts, including a global one to show the window

@Una yes! I miss transient status messages like that. Change it as often as you want without annoying people. Write weird #Adium scripts to show live data or make them interactive. Those were the days.

@tixie the only client I used for OS X (years, years ago) was #Adium. It met your listed requirements and supported encryption via OTR, but sadly still doesn't offer support for modern, multi-device encryption like #OMEMO yet:

I'm not sure if other modern clients like Gajim or Dino run on Mac OS, you may look into those as well.
