Stemming “male drift,” or trying to reach “gender parity” in enrollment, or affirmative action for men: the latest trend. Wow. nytimes.com/2023/09/08/magazin

"There are close to three for every two men in in [the U.S.]. ...
But the easiest way for many competitive to fix their gender ratios lies in the selection process, at which point officers often informally privilege applicants, a tendency that critics say amounts to for men.
At the very least, Martin says, we should know when there’s a thumb on the scale, and for whom."

Ron DeSantis’ efforts to shake up the establishment, or , now include testing. The Classical Learning Test, with an emphasis on the western, Judeo-Christian canon, will replace College Board exams (SAT & ACT). One says the new test feels like it was written by humans. nytimes.com/2023/09/06/us/sat-

Academic snapshot 3:

As the new semester begins, we hope students will be eager & successful, but we know we may occasionally shake our heads at some decisions Admissions has made.

But as I like to say: it could always be worse.

Sometimes Admissions guesses wrong.

But we don't see the potentially disastrous candidates they do successfully weed out.

Evaluating a Learned Admission- Model as a Replacement for Standardized Tests in

"We find that a prediction model trained on past admission data outperforms an SAT-based heuristic and matches the demographic composition of the last admitted class."

Biden Administration to investigate at Harvard, or the practice of affirmative action for white people. Earlier studies have shown that without legacy admissions, Harvard could achieve racial balance/diversity goals. nytimes.com/2023/07/25/us/poli

Surprising nobody, if you are rich, you are significantly more likely to get in elite schools. If you are very poor, you have an extremely slight advantage. If you are between very poor and very rich.... tough luck kid, roll the dice better next time. Somebody has to pay the price for other people's advantages.

I really hope stats like these really put to bed the notion that getting into elite schools are even remotely close to meritocracy.

Now that the U.S. has rejected affirmative action in college , questions arise about what direction the country is expected to go in terms of opportunity and a system that rewards achievement.

Just saw someone suggest the Biden administration simply ignore ' rulings from yesterday. Philosophically, it might be time. The enforcement mechanisms are mostly norms.* SCOTUS broke 'em first. I welcome opinions from real ConLaw scholars, of course.

The practicalities seem to make most sense re: student . Just send the money anyway.

However re: , the 'support' of the administration is not worth enough for colleges to deal with the lawsuits from mediocre white students. Lower courts are simply going to apply SCOTUS' ruling.

Slightly more complicated, if we indicate we're going to send the DOJ against businesses that discriminate... 1. the status of people as a protected class is not clear (nor is the status of the concept of 'protected class' at all, given this Court). 2. Again, we now have an extant high court ruling, and that's it for most lower courts, understandably.

*Though one does hate to follow Andrew Jackson in anything.

We need non-elitist education institutions. I'm not sure how to get there, but our current universities can't live up to their stated missions when their main social function is to credential the elite.
