Play it to any new #LOTR audience post-#PeterJackson and it sounds alien when compared to the airy folk music- understandbly; but the core theme and ambience is so intrinsic to 80s #TTRPG that it is almost in the DNA of the genre. It almost supercedes modern fantasy.

49 followers · 437 posts · Server dice.campI recently watched the movie Fanboys, set in the 90s about a group that try to break into Skywalker Ranch and see Phanton Menace early. One person sees it and says, "You gotta keep the flaws, crappy effects, real puppets. That's what makes it so good, you know?" That's how I feel about #ADnD. I can easily argue that #5e is a more accessible & elegant game, but my group still retells stories about ridiculous events from incongruent rules. Perhaps it's nostalgia, but we haven't found that with 5e.

The game I’ve played more than any other game across 46 years of RPG’ing is Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, 1st edition. I’ve spent more time in those books and have played in those mechanics far more than anything else. I’ve written, spoken and created mostly for AD&D and it’s been the underlying mechanics for an ongoing fourteen year campaign with multiple, simultaneous groups. It’s the system I’ll reach for by default, mostly.

It would have to be the first time I encountered a Lich in the AD&D 1st Edition days. It was the summer of 82 or so, and this lich kicked our asses.

probably a game of #Ravenloft we played as kids in the 90s. Parents of a friend had a garden house in an allotment garden, where we stayed overnight and got all jazzed up about the brand new #adnd Ravenloft boxed set. In the end, we were scared of going the bathroom. Yes I know, Ravenloft is really silly, but that was the foundation of my love for the setting.

Day 26: CHARACTER SHEET
Before I ran any #ttrpg, I was world building. Creating continents, kingdoms, heroes, and villains. Many will recognize this sheet with the ample area for honor in #ADnD.
The bbeg of the world was named Omicron: a master of Bear, Cobra, Dragon, AND Hawk styles! Lol. Draped in black (probably) full plate +4 and wielding an imposing battle axe +4. But he's an ugly S.o.B. (9 CMS score).
Just one I had fun stumbling across for #RPGaDAy2023.
