My thoughts on the finalists for #TheHugoAwards for 2023, in the Best Novella category: #books #bookstodon (1/n):

In #OGRES by #AdrianTchaikovsky, Torquell is the wastrel son of a village mayor, but his occasional fistfights and mischief are tolerated because he's generally likable. This temper causes a disaster when Lord Peter, the ogre who owns the village, comes for a visit: Torquell gets his father in fatal trouble and has to flee,. Sounds like a fantasy story about revolution, right? The revolution part is correct -- the fantasy part is not. A previous book by Tchaikovsky, ELDER RACE, also bridged SF and fantasy in a similar way. Just finished reading part 1 of a 3 part series called The Children Of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky. I recommend it to anyone any like SF and doesn't mind spiders. Looking forward to part 2. 📘 🕷️

A wonderfully detailed and highly philosophical account of existence, culture and relationships in the far future. Still prefer Children of Ruin though.

The only contemporary sci-fi I've found which is close to Banks is by Adrian Tchaikovsky.

Children of Time is incredibly impressive yet accessible high sci-fi. His current active trilogy, The Final Architecture, leans more towards space opera, and is also excellent.

Just started on the latest Adrian Tchaikovsky book "Children of Memory" and yep, he's a really flipping good author.

It's just so well written it has me absolutely hooked.

@Shell #AdrianTchaikovsky is the best #SciFi writer that I’ve read in quite a while. #DogsOfWar is a really good place to start.

#TheExpanse series by #JamesCorey is smart enough whilst being a lot of fun (think #Firefly crossed with #starwars).

#StephenGrahamJones is one of my favourite writers across any genres - carefully avoiding spoilers - I think #Mongrels might be of interest.

Along with others, the #Culture books by #IainMBanks. Nothing compares to them, though I do like some of #AdrianTchaikovsky scifi. Didn't like #PeterFHamilton.

Perhaps try these:
#PhilipReeve - young adult target audience. The #MortalEngines series are place to start.
#GeorgeMacDonaldFraser - the #Flashman books are magnificent historical fiction, though are very politically incorrect.
#CSForester - the #Hornblower books are probably the most enjoyable set of books I've read.
#AdrianTchaikovsky - a prolific writer and the best contemporary #scifi I've read after #iainmbanks. "Children of Time" is a good start
