Interesting. For the first time I have just seen a website popup/display saying that I was using an adblocker and needed to turn it off to view the website. I am using the DuckDuckGo browser which blocks trackers, but doesn't actually stop ads from displaying but am not using an actual AdBlocker.

: "Don't let Chrome's big redesign distract you from the fact that Chrome's invasive new ad platform, ridiculously branded the "Privacy Sandbox," is also getting a widespread rollout in Chrome today. If you haven't been following this, this feature will track the web pages you visit and generate a list of advertising topics that it will share with web pages whenever they ask, and it's built directly into the Chrome browser. It's been in the news previously as "FLoC" and then the "Topics API," and despite widespread opposition from just about every non-advertiser in the world, Google owns Chrome and is one of the world's biggest advertising companies, so this is being railroaded into the production builds.

Google seemingly knows this won't be popular. Unlike the glitzy front-page Google blog post that the redesign got, the big ad platform launch announcement is tucked away on the privacysandbox.com page. The blog post says the ad platform is hitting "general availability" today, meaning it has rolled out to most Chrome users. This has been a long time coming, with the APIs rolling out about a month ago and a million incremental steps in the beta and dev builds, but now the deed is finally done."

Google gets its way, bakes a user-tracking ad platform directly into Chrome
Chrome now directly tracks users, generates a "topic" list it shares with advertisers.

: "Hundreds of fines have been issued for breaches of GDPR, including against Google, British Airways and Amazon. But data experts say those are just the tip of the iceberg. A study last year by David Basin at ETH Zurich in Switzerland found that 95 per cent of websites may be breaking GDPR rules. Even the legislation’s aim to make it easier to understand what data we are agreeing to provide has gone unrealised. Since the legislation came into effect, research shows that privacy agreements have become more convoluted, not less. And if you thought that ad-blockers and virtual private networks (VPNs) – which hide your computer’s IP address – offer protection, think again. Many of these services also sell on your data.

We are only now grasping the scale and intricacy of the online tracking landscape. A few big names – the likes of Google, Meta, Amazon and Microsoft – hold much of the power, says Isabel Wagner, associate professor of cybersecurity at the University of Basel, Switzerland. But behind these big players, a diverse ecosystem of thousands, if not millions, of buyers, sellers, servers, trackers and analysers are sharing our personal data."

: "The ad identifier - aka “IDFA” on iOS, or “AAID” on Android - is the key that enables most third-party tracking on mobile devices. Disabling it will make it substantially harder for advertisers and data brokers to track and profile you, and will limit the amount of your personal information up for sale.

This post explains the history of device ad identifiers and how they have enabled persistent tracking, identification, and other privacy invasions.

But first things first. Here’s how to revoke tracker access to your ad ID right now:"

I’m going camping shortly, but first it’s apparent to me that if you delete your ad ID and don’t allow tracking, Yahoo mostly serves up RW news and propaganda as the default. Why is RW propaganda the default?

That’s my PSA.

It seems to me the movement of Microsoft and Google toward AI in summarization of search has more to do with capturing ad revenue (or building a death grip of leverage) from the long tail of content creators than it does with the supposed user benefits. Another pro of capturing ad revenue before sites are even visited is more first-party tracking data.

Elon's new plan to slow the advertiser-exodus bleeding:

(1) REQUIRE people to opt-in to tracking, or

(2) delete the app and never come back.
