Since is trending and I am an adult human female, I'd just like to say:
🌈 A uterus doesn't make a woman!
🌈 Transwomen are women!
🌈 Non-binary people are valid!
🌈 Trans rights are human rights!

Happy to ALL women 🥰

I, like all trans women, are .

"Gender Critical" (the term TERFs use instead of TERF now, but still basically means "we understand and enforce gender the same way the Nazis historically did, allow us to quote Mein Kampf unironically") people can get bent.

A woman is an whether she's trans or cis. Remember, cis women are women too! We should all be whether they're normal women or cis women!

As mentioned in the toot below, I've been having conversations with a TERF.

The term you'll hear them use more often is .

When I asked what the term meant she said essentially that she was critical of the existence of gender. Socially imposed roles are arbitrary and only meaningful inasmuch as society gives them meaning.

I said that this felt more or less consistent with me identifying as - that I acknowledged that gender roles were BS and not meaningful, looked at the two defaults and said "neither of those, I'll take everything else instead"

She didn't seem convinced, and seemed to argue from a position that any identity is inherently limiting, where my experience feels expansive.

Regarding the position that if gender doesn't exist, being transgender can't exist, I asked about furries.

As a quick extra CW I'm not a furry and speak from a place of relative ignorance.

I pointed out that furries find genuine value in inhabiting identities that are not based in reality, and if that's the case, why can't it also be the case for trans people?

She replied that there is noone of a pre-existing furry identity to be alienated by people who adopt that identity later.

As I understood her, everything boils down to the idea that laws made to protect 'women' were written before trans women were linguistically included in the term "women," and that the conflation of gender as a social construct versus biological sex are not clear in the laws, and people are hurt by the ambiguity.

Let me reiterate that that's my understanding, not her words, because her words struck me as hurtful and very challenging to endure, but she was just trying to communicate straightforwardly in a way that was consistent with her position.

It took some time for us to reach a point where we could comfortably communicate about these issues because hearing the wrong pronouns or certain expressions -CW- [eg that a trans woman is a "man in womanface"] was so fundamentally upsetting to me that I couldn't focus on the content. On one occasion she sent me an article about a trans girl who got very violent with cis girls in the school bathroom when they wouldn't talk to her. The blurb included the line "he 'identifies' as a girl," using 'he' pronouns and putting 'identifies' in quotes.

I told her I felt like she was daring me to be upset by the language when the story is about terrible violence, but I couldn't get past it.

This is actually the conversation that did the most to show her the boundaries I needed in order to have these conversations. She felt like I was showing a lack of empathy for the victims, and sure I was, but the language may as well have been designed to be upsetting and alienating.

I no longer feel that this kind of language is intentionally hateful or hurtful from TERF authors. Arguably the intent is irrelevant if the effect is the same. I understand that there's protections that TERFs have concerns about applying equally to trans women and cis women when those protections were intended for uterus-havers or other trans-woman-exclusive categoreies specifically.

I can see how those concerns are probably justified, at least in part. The fundamental issue as far as I can see it is an insistence by TERFs that they not be the ones to change the language they use. That rather than distinguish between trans and cis women where necessary they refuse to acknowledge anyone who laws would have described as a woman when they were written as a woman now.

For that reason I feel like TERFism allows laws to dictate how people are allowed to identify themselves and others. My hackles bristle.

...

Since then she asked me to watch the movie . She said that it was much more reserved in the language it used than the articles she sent me. I don't think that's the case. The first half or so of the movie is essentially stating without any authority the definitions of terms TERFs rely on - hence the title. It feels both remedial and upsetting - making it excruciatingly tedious.

The second half of the movie was more bearable, focusing mostly on anecdotes of cis women who suffered because of ambiguities in how gender words are used. The impact and suffering seem real. The conclusion the filmmakers assume is inevitable is not. I don't remember clearly and I definitely won't rewatch it to find out, but my sense is that the movie did not provide statistics to situate these instances within broader trends. Moreover the focus of the film was entirely on the UK, in many ways irrelevant to other places. If you have a strong stomach you can find it on YouTube.

I still don't have a great grasp on this stuff but I come away from these conversations with a sense that TERFs tend to be motivated by genuine and justified feminist concerns, and maybe the way that we talk about transness should be reassessed. But the insistence on using alienating rhetoric and aligning themselves with far right media outlets means they're unlikely to be heard or taken seriously.

I'm certainty not offering to act as a conduit, or reach out to other TERFs in the future here. This experience has been labor enough, and certainty not something I'd undertake with someone i didn't already have a close relationship with.

Just to add to this. Although much of the ’Gender critical’ movement is simple bigotry, there are some within it who aim to give it academic credibility. Kathleen Stock, a philosopher, for example is one of these.

I think it’s important to challenge not only the overt bigotry but also the ‘scholarly’ assumptions that give transphobia a veneer of respectability.

Much of the anti-trans movement relies on a philosophical notion that “woman” = “Adult Human Female”.

This paper shows that this is logically false.

This 'gender critical' documentary 'adult human female' is mostly extremely tedious (who could have guessed? lol) but there are occasionally moments of editing that are so fucking surreal it's impossible not to do a little nervous laugh.

I swear I didn't add ANYTHING to this clip. This is how it appears in the doc at 1:02:25

CW: human remains... seriously

"The IOC says it should not be assumed a transgender athlete automatically has an unfair advantage in female events.

Its new framework also changes the policy on requiring transgender women to suppress testosterone levels in order to compete in those events.

They say the guidance has been drafted mainly from a human rights perspective with little consideration of medical and scientific issues."

Apparently, women no longer have any human rights.
