I swerved to the right onto the verge which was basically muddy plowed orchard. I pulled the emergency brake, it felt disconnected. I reached Wolf at maybe 20 mph and steered between two cars crossing Fremont on Wolfe. Into the orchard furrows I went and the car stopped in about 10 feet safely.
The Austin had Hyd. brakes in front and mechanical in the rear. Hyd. Fluid leaked out and the rod connecting the rear brakes broke.

A long time ago I had an Austin A90 Atlantic. The SCCA crowd I hung around with liked it, Guys I went to Laguna Seca with in the late 50's, They raced, I partied, except for a little pit work.
It was 1960 and the Fremont Road, Wolf Road, area was Orchard.
On my way to work down Fremont to work at Stanford going probably 40 the traffic stopped in front of me at Wolf and I hit the brakes.
There was a snap and the pedal hit the floor.
