A day of for an anthology, so short works of 1200 words.

Two big issues jumped out:

Over use of -ly adverbs in narrative. This is weak writing and tells, rather than shows. It doesn't require too much rearranging to use a verb. My general rule is <4 -ly adverbs per page.

Point of view (POV). In short fiction keep to 1 or at most 2 POVs, and make it clear whose mind we're occupying.

@SaraNSmit The point of being told to avoid adverbs is to try to force the writer to find a more specific verb, which is generally the better choice. But if you cannot find a verb that says what you need it to, use the adverb.

Question for fellow writing tooters.

I’m sitting here writing & sometimes I will obsess over a sentence so as not to use an adverb. It really stalls me on occasion.

During the twit days, I had it beaten into my head that adverbs are the Devil, basically because Stephen King said so. So I will obsess over not using them at all, even when a sentence is practically begging for one. Logically I feel like they’re okay sometimes.

a reviewer informs that is NOT against , it is against the abundant use of adverbs. "Instead of these verbal atrocities, switch over to a more powerful verb. For instance, instead of saying that someone is 'walking slowly' you can say they 'tip-toed' or they 'crept.' That way, your writing is more vivid.
