I really liked Dubal's legal reasoning and argument, and to it I would add a call to reinvigorate countertwiddling: reforming laws that get in the way of workers who want to reverse-engineer, spoof, and control the apps that currently control *them*. #AdversarialInteroperability (AKA #CompetitiveCompatibility or #ComCom) is key tool for building worker power in an era of digital Taylorism:

@happyborg @atomicpoet The real solution to the problem of commercialization of the Internet (of which the problem of #SocialMedia is a subproblem) is to de-illegalize #ReverseEngineering (or repeal what the PR types prefer to call #AntiCircumvention). Interoperability that requires permission is by definition not #AdversarialInteroperability.

@Rairii @gsuberland @cstross Always has. #DMCA & #DRM (https://www.defectivebydesign.org/) being used as weapons against #RightToRepair and #ComCom #ReverseEngineering leads to vast amounts of unnecessary e-waste and consumption every year.

In fairness some portion of their failure to respond is on me. I'm known for being too bristly when I finally build up the confidence to request something that I expect will be received as audacious. Plus I was feeling my oats in an #AdversarialInteroperability kind of way at that time. I'm sure I exuded it.
I started with local affiliates — or in one case a specific PBS broadcast — instead of going immediately to their respective HQs. I'll level up my advocacy skills first, then try again.
@lanodan @ariadne Yeah, a legal pain in the ass /because/ copyright (and patent) exist.
In which case a lot of that difficulty goes right out the window.
#AdversarialInteroperability and #ComCom goes back to being the rule rather than the exception.

@nytpu Along lines of similar thought, there's still this:

As for @wftl's question, a lot of current implementations of this qualify: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/10/adversarial-interoperability

Is it just me thinking Twitter is turning off their third-party API just to stop tools like debirdify and movetodon helping people get out of the walled garden? #Twitter #Mastodon #AdversarialInteroperability

@warren__terra @verysimple Probably if IFTTT refuses to pay and doesn't just start using #AdversarialInteroperability (https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/10/adversarial-interoperability) & reverse-engineer Twitter's private APIs to keep the feature functional.
Similarly, all bot intended to post regular pictures every few hours or cross-post news will face the same issue.
3rd-party apps that don't go #ComCom (https://pluralistic.net/tag/comcom/) or pay-up will also die (or at least lose access to #Twitter).

When Netflix was getting started, it could freely #interoperate with the #DVDs that the studios had put on the market. It could repurpose those DVDs in ways that the studios strenuously objected to. In other words, Netfix used #AdversarialInteroperability (AKA #CompetitiveCompatibility or #ComCom) to launch its business:

@a doing an #AdversarialInteroperability and making it so people with big entrenched gh actions workflows can move over (as well as breaking the corporate monopoly gh actions was intended to create) seems like real good strategy to me.
Anti-monopoly measures are slow and ponderous tools, but when it comes to tech companies, we have faster, more nimble ones. If we want to make it easy to compete with Amazon, we could - for example - use #AdversarialInteroperability to turn it into a dumb pipe:

@aruns @isagalaev @craigmaloney this is the sort of #adversarialinteroperability that @pluralistic advocate, so I'd rather it be managed for me anyway, I bet at least one of those three will try to break it at some point
@vortex_egg ugh...crypto techbros are why we can't have nice things
Well considering that BlueSky is a nascent organisation at this point the community behind it can still be what we make it if we are determined enough. Jay appears to have the right priorities but has a tough job ahead of her so we'd have to be VERY determined to keep the concerns of users in view.
At the very least we have to watch BlueSky closely to ensure we can preserve #AdversarialInteroperability
@djsundog #AdversarialInteroperability is being rebranded as #CompetitiveInteroperability, which speaks more to a system of values the world gets: money, markets, monopoly.
recent EFF "How to Fix the Internet" podcast touched on a lot of good/interesting topics here-abouts.

breaking up the companies is boring as hell. there's still too little chance for anyone else. the podcast touches on this a bit, citing Twitter exploring "bluesky", funding folks interested in decentralizing. that needs to happen, with the facebook content, whether the facebook wants it or not. not hot facebook, not hot.

A immediate action for a solution I would suggest is give feedback to not just to spotify but your podcast host. Review bombing works. I also highly recomend looking up #adversarialinteroperability
