@Anibyl @bikescape remove the #yellowCenterlines, maybe try it as #advisoryBikeLanes

This #chokePoint is how you combine #trafficCalming and safer #crosswalks, with more cost-effective #EdgeLaneRoads. Instead of #YellowCenterlines forcing people on bikes to "share" with cars, two-way car traffic shares one center lane. The #AdvisoryBikeLanes can be used for two drivers to pass each other, but by default, those spaces are dedicated to people walking and biking. (SW 45th, #SWTFpdx, so many streets need this, not blinking lights and victim-blaming.)

survey says people in #Portland would rather sit on #transit & read than be #drivers. #pdxBikes and #eBikes seem popular, must be time to paint "bus and turn only" on the outside lanes of our #stroads and let's get out of #pdxTraffic + do a solid #ClimateAction, plus besides: #CarsRuinCities #GeometryHatesCars, the future of #transportation is kids biking themselves to school or joining a #BikeBus, make #SchoolStreets, #BusLanes, & #EdgeLaneRoads / #AdvisoryBikeLanes, out of existing car lanes

#BikeNite A8 @carolski #pedalPaloozaPDX is an amazing 3-month-long thing but the picture I have from this ride shows a poorly-designed #EdgeLaneRoad / #AdvisoryBikeLanes design (shoulda had a shared central lane narrower than 2.5 car widths) with door-zone lane outside of parking and a car parked in the way for the cherry on top. #PBOT #ClimateWishing #TrafficEngineering

@benfulton not weird at all. edge lane roads / #advisoryBikeLanes are totally common in developed nations, where they've realized that cars can share. It's not, however, a good solution for places with cut-through traffic and unwillingness to follow the best practice of diverting or otherwise impeding cars (such as with a chokepoint and steel bollards) to reduce volumes. This may be another example of that, such as the popularly cited failure in AZ iirc
Besides counting the bollards in this video (#bollards are one cost-effective way that smart #TrafficEngineers make it impossible to drive a car onto bikeways & small bridges without #consent), also dig this #EdgeLaneRoad / #AdvisoryBikeLanes setup as a fiscally responsible alternative to yellow #CenterLines and free #Parking vs #InducedDemand for #BikesAsTransportation #ClimateAction #VisionZero etc. Note small child riding their own 🚲 https://youtu.be/wnj7HGRwEsk

@DrTCombs #AdvisoryBikeLanes pretty much suck everywhere that they exist. We luckily don't have too many painted on-road lanes in the Netherlands, properly separated and safe cyclepaths are far more common, but where painted lanes exist our drivers drive in them, park in them, use them to cut corners etc. just like drivers in your and every other country would do. Cyclists everywhere need real infrastructure not just paint.

It's not that #AdvisoryBikeLanes won't work in the US. It's that we won't implement them in a way that would work. Just like so many other #RoadDesign ideas that we try and copy from Europe without actually understanding or definitely not embracing the contexts in which they work.

I'm seeing a disheartening growth in interest in #AdvisoryBikeLanes in the US, and am here to caution #cities & #DOTs against them. We already know our #drivers don't respect conventional painted #BikeLanes. It's a bit silly to think they'll know what to do with advisory bike lanes, especially when we install them on #streets built to accommodate #speeding (i.e., nearly every US street).
#advisorybikelanes #cities #dots #Drivers #bikelanes #streets #speeding
If the #AdvisoryBikeLanes #EdgeLaneRoads were actually proportioned like these diagrams, they would be amazing. Not shown: curbs & steel bollards needed every few blocks to keep drivers from ignoring the paint completely. A street in the 26th largest US city needs design elements which get in the way of cars, or it becomes a stroad.
E-mail Scott to say that we should try to put curbs, planters, bollards, or something in the way of speeding cars sometimes.
