I'm finally watching Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies this weekend (extended edition).

I don't  know much about Tolkein's influences, but it feels like quite the mix of various mythologies, hefty doses of the Iliad, bits of the Odyssey, and the Aeneid on the destruction of Troy, all wrapped up in the eschatology of the Book of Revelation.

I picked up a copy of the Robert Fitzgerald translation of The Aenied.

Anyone have any thoughts on this translation or have a preferred translation that they recommend?

I am one section in it is fun and readable so far.

I'm looking forward to reading this translation of The Aeneid by Shadi Bartsch. From the opening lines it feels fresh and vital.

Special mention of the beautiful edge painting on the Australian paperback edition, extending the stunning orange of the covers and spine around all sides of the book.
