I am experimenting with editing some of my digital images in an attempt to emulate the look of false-color infrared slide film. Kodak Aerochrome, and Ektachrome Infrared EIR films produced surreal landscape images with foliage appearing pink, or red, instead of the normal green color one would expect. The infrared film stocks were discontinued about 15 years ago, and they are almost impossible to find these days.

I saw some Kodak Aerochrome photos from back in the 1950s and the modern day filtered versions.

I want to try to figure out how to make a filter to make the effect.

There is also #InfraredPhotography and #infrarot (same but opposite in German) and some people tag the wavelength like #IR72 and then there is the especially awesome #aerochrome filter that creates autumn colors straight out of a full spectrum camera. This infrared thing is really addictive!

Maybe this is the wrong question to ask. If you frame it as a tool, it's all about the utility. The #Aerochrome infrared film was developed for military observation and used for forest health monitoring. It was a great tool for the job.
But photography is as much a tool as it is art, and the false colors of NIR around 600nm and intense contrasts if going beyond 750nm are a great way to change the perspective and see our world with alien eyes. Art doesn't need a practical justification!

Took the Gameboy out this morning to make some trichromes, but I took out the Vortoscope as well. The first image is a regular trichrome of a tree. The second is the same tree, but with an infrared image. Yes, it's an aerochrome vortograph. 😉

@analog_cafe great article! I got all inspired and envious, being a 100% digital #infrared photographer. The Chrome filter is quite expensive at larger diameters, but it looks like #aerochrome inspired some more engineering efforts, leading to cheaper filters for full spectrum cameras:

It took me two years to make sense of this picture. When I looked at it with clearer eyes, I wanted to do something different with it. So, I created a faux #Aerochrome profile in #Lightroom but instead of purple, I turned green into red.
