Cratinus was a highly successful writer of Attic Old Comedy, but the very fragmentary nature of his surviving plays means that he is not as well remembered as Aristophanes (eleven of whose plays come down to us intact). worldhistory.org/article/794/t

"Why is Shakespeare *only* an artist (though the first) and Aeschylus inspired? Why is Greek art not art but inspiration? I have always felt, though it is a treason in an Englishman to say so, when I have opened Shakespeare, this is *only* art. I shall never open this book except at a leisure moment, never open it to fit me for the struggles which convulse our lives... There are many inferior artists, far, far inferior artists to Shakespeare, who have had a higher ideal, especially in regard to women, than his. With the exception of his Brutus’s wife (and perhaps Isabella), I don’t know one of his women who lives for anything but her personal hopes and fears. But Aeschylus, who will degrade him?"

Florence Nightingale (letter to her sister Parthenope [29 April 1850])
