@eddyjokovich In my area of Melbourne, three of the strongest govt schools, all with waiting lists at yr7, are without staff to teach to VCE. They need (between them) 3 English teachers, 1 music teacher, 1 Tech teacher, 2 French teachers and a Wellbeing coordinator.
If good schools can't recruit, how are struggling or rural schools managing? It appears PRIVATE schools are creaming of staff by offering $10k pa more than Govt schools can. Yet again private education is damaging Govt schools.
When will this farce stop? Private schools have no right taking money, staff and resources from the govt sector.

@radicalxstitch I'm so sorry kids are having to deal with "Your child's VCE depends on staff available to run courses. FAR FAR MORE than covid, this affects the subject choices they are making & ultimately the career pathways they will/won't be able to choose.
**The govt needs to get onto this as a matter of urgency.**
You can tell by birth rate how many kids you will have entering secondary schools 12 yrs later. They know what the school capacity will be in 12 yrs time & how many staff will be needed.
They also know that ppl like me in mid-60s will be retiring & need replacing.
What they *aren't* doing is providing the money for resources and salaries to make young Grad Teachers stay in the profession.
Way too many are staying 5yrs and then leaving.
They cite: long working hours, large classes, no time for planning, assessing and reviewing, not enough mentoring or time to be supported by more experienced colleague/s, all the above = Burn Out. So they leave for better paid jobs in diff career areas.
Plus, Yr12 students aren't studying English Maths Langs Sciences and choosing to be a teacher with those degrees. There aren't students training into B.Ed in those subjects.
The Govt needs to realise this is a ticking time bomb & they need to fund schools in the govt system massively more.
For a struggling school and newly qualified teachers it DEFINITELY comes down to $$$$. Too much is going to private schools.

@kerriesmith I don't disagree up to a point (i taught in public system for 38yrs) but the cards are so stacked against kids like ours.
Money doesn't "make" a school good but it sure helps with resources, incl staffing: educ support staff for the kids that need them, specialist teachers for the smaller Subject areas (literature, languages, law, drama that are too expensive to run for Yrs11/12), music equipment that works, computers that are sufficient in number for all students, sports equipment, money available to pay for struggling families to take kids on excursions and camps... i could go on endlessly.
Public schools would do SO much for all areas of curriculum with the govt money that is siphoned off for private schools. Those schools that already get payment from parents. The wealthy effectively pay fees but then get public (their) money back again in the form of tax payers money. Is řeally immoral and represents $$ millions every year.

Deeply concerned that 40% of students in Australia are in private schools. They get the lions share of govt money. Tax payers money. MY MONEY and it's simply wrong.
AUS is slipping further back in the PISA global educational ranking against countries like Finnland Germany Sweden, where there is huge investment in govt schools and private schools are generally frowned upon.
Only when the vast and committed majority of parents have children enrolled in govt schools, will standards improve.
That Aus schools receive govt funding at all is a monstrous malpractice and should stop if we want standards in education hete to improve. #AusEdu #AEU #Nationalcurriculum #AusLabour

I've had the most lovely final week at work. A special farewell lunch, gifts and speeches on Tuesday with my office colleagues, then on Wednesday the Federal Executive meeting voted to make me a life member of the #AEU. I don't get surprised often and I was a bit shocked! I get to go to the Federal Conference in February and give a speech to accept it. One day more - it will be a fairly quiet last day tomorrow.

In early December I am really excited to be starting a new role as Executive Officer of the Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre.
CNLC is a community house and registered as a large #charity with revenue in excess of $1 million, with 25 staff and 60+ volunteers. CNLC delivers #CommunityDevelopment and #environmental programs, and a range of adult education courses. Its primary focus is working with people who experience disadvantage, in particular new #migrants and #refugees and people with #disability.
While I’m looking forward to returning to leading a charity and a #grassroots community organisation, I’m sad to leaving my role as Campaigns Officer at the Australian Education Union Federal Office after five years. The work of the #AEU is incredibly important - shaping the future of millions of Australian children and young people (and also adults in the case of #TAFE) over generations. #PublicEducation provides hope and opportunity that many might otherwise not have. Public education was incredibly important in shaping my life and I will remain a lifelong advocate for the work of the AEU and our sister unions globally.
PS: Charities don’t have much spare money, so I’ll be calling on people I know for favours. Thanks in advance 🙂!
