In the early 1980s, I made friends with some people from Cameroon. I learnt to dance #Makossa, a music style from #Douala. This tune https://invidious.namazso.eu/watch?v=26IEtF5R4aU was one of the big hits of the time. When you learn to dance it, this music is real fun.
In those days, I think I must have spent ceveral hundred ours watching people dance and getting into the secrets of #AfricanDance (see https://norden.social/@nannus/109344705974793583) and #AfricanMusic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOadhSGA-pQ Nwomkro music and Adowa dance. I consider myself lucky to have learnt at least some Adowa from my dancing teacher, the late Isaak Amissah, former member of National Ballet of Ghana, in the mid.1980s in #Hamburg. My favorite dance! Adowa feels extremely elegant and beautiful and also is pure joy to watch if you know how to dance it. In this recording, especially the two older women are marvelous. #africanmuscic #africandance #music #dance Greetings to #blackmastodon

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28TuopCehHE I bought my copy of this record in 1984 or 1985 from a record dealer in front of Mambo Jambo in Marktstraße in #Hamburg. He was there to offer records to the club owners (Carola and Dieter :-)) and I bought some disks from him (including a rare Nwom Kro record (to dance Adowa), but that is another story). Danced to this tune many times in Mambo Jambo, later in Bomala, and at home. A classic of #Soukous from the king of this style. #Africanmusic #Africandance #Dance #Music

#africanmusic #africandance The interesting thing about African dance is: it's a proprioceptive art form, not primarily visual. Dancers produce ordered spatio-temporal patterns in their bodies (feelable music for the sensors in the muscles, tendons, vestibular system). This combines with the music you hear. European culture missed the possibility of such an artform. But you have to do it yourself, it cannot be passively consumed. If you know it, you can see in others., so its secondarily visual.
