Have you met Lothar yet? A 17 year old Congo African Grey parrot.

This morning we were having our morning chatfest - call & response whistling, salutations, and repeated calling of Husband’s name. It was cute & interactive, so I decided to record it.

You may have heard how intelligent African Greys are. It’s true. Lothar will put together phrases that are situational appropriate (not ones we’ve taught him). Inanycase, for the most part, African Greys are not performing parrots (outside of multi hours training with food rewards).

As soon as I decided to start recording Lothar this morning, he went silent. Lothar looked at me suspiciously and just stopped all human:parrot convo. Happens every time I try to record him. Dancing? Stops. Chattering? Shuts up. Call & response? Silence.

He knows I’m recording him and establishes he is not a performing parrot. But he will FaceTime with Alexander.

I love having my #AfricanGrey in my study with me when I'm teaching remotely but she will not stay on her playstand and I cannot be chasing her around all day when I'm trying to work. So I am shopping for a small cage on wheels, suitable for a grey, that I can roll her around the house in and that she can hang out in just for a couple of hours a day. Suggestions?

This is one of my birds, Opie. He came with my husband and Opie is now almost 17 years old. He's only cuddly with Morgan, otherwise he likes minimal contact and prefers to just vibe near others, hang upside down and attack his toys or sing and practice his sounds. He gets hype when I put on preschooler shows for him.

Sometimes something I'm doing at my desk will capture Opie's attention and he'll stop doing whatever to simply stare at me like a creep lol

I really like #birds. We live with a Timneh #africangrey whose love language involves biting and two #parakeets. Someday, I want some chickens... Other #pets: I also take care of a big mop dog and two kitties. I'll resist the urge to spam photos of all of them lol.

I've lived with an #AfricanGrey #parrot for more than 24 years, and in the last few years he's learned how to hum (which I still find weird). I guess that makes him a #hummingbird 😂

Good evening! A slightly coy looking Rosi, my sister's african grey parrot. Which is misleading, because Rosi is definitely not coy...! More recently I've been enjoying doing these fast charcoal sketches (but only when they work out - some are a disaster!)

This is my husband’s 15 yo #AfricanGrey. His name is Dai Chi and he’s an handful! 😉 He talks but stops as soon as he sees a camera or a red light. We’ve had him since he was 8 wks old, hand fed him, taught him a few tricks to stop plummeting when he was learning to fly, and I taught him to make fart sounds. (Hence, why I prefer “tooting.” 😂)
